The Crying of Lot 49

Just finished this and thought it was pretty good. It was my first introduction to Pynchon and after reading it I think I'll further pursue his other works. Took a little bit to get used to the prose. It felt at times I was reading the work of some stoic engineer or mathematician, and then other times I would get a beautiful artistic soliloquy. The ending gave me vibes of American Psycho in terms of was it all hallucinations and paranoia or did it actually occur, what's the generally consensus on the ending? Now that I've read this do I move on to Gravity's Rainbow or should I read something else first?

Welcome to the official thread for /lit/izens working on their novel, or those of you wondering about the process. Tell us what your novel is about. Post passages for critique. Share novel writing wisdom. Discuss the novelist lifestyle. Ask each other about publishers or agents. Share in the struggle that is novel writing.

What does your editing process usually look like? How many drafts before you ask someone to critique? How many drafts in general before you consider it to be a completed work? I know the right answer is "however many you need" or "it depends on the work" or "it's never completed", but I want to know what you personally do.

I am looking for an experimental, poetic slightly philosophical high quality book, either fiction or non fiction to read. Maybe its bordering on academic. Does it exist?

Who's the best character in literature and why is it Jean Valjean?

I want to write high-quality 10,000 words per day, like Robert Louis Stevenson did when he wrote Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. How do I do it without using vast amounts of cocaine? I can write about 1,000 or 2000 words per day but then I get tired and bored.

Advice for writing really, really fucking long books? I'm talking 900+ page monolithic doorstops that look intimidating to anyone. Should it just be filled with reams of technical knowledge meshed into the story or are masses of primary, secondary and tertiary characters the best way to rack up the page number? Is coffee or self medication the preferred way to go about writing 7000+ words a day? Is it better to write in spasmodic bursts or make it a long continuous process? The most pages I've ever written for a single story is 378 but I want to have a go at something ridiculous.

How is it possible that with the advent of the scientific method people still believe in unfalsifiable nonsense?
