How exactly did DFW become a meme? Why is he the most popular author on /lit/ and the most discussed one? Is it just because he killed himself and because of his unfinished work, just like Kafka? I don't get it.

Poetry Sharing/Critique Thread

Can we have a poetry critique/sharing thread? I just started writing and learning about poetry for the first time, so here's my first go: >The rain came down in spiderweb-like strings >And slapped the concrete street with fury strong. >We watched the sky and clouds spin round, like soup >Inside a giant pot. My thoughts felt small, >My bones unclean and empty, mind a mess >In front of nature's brutal ignorance. >In mutual terror, eyes spin round inside our skulls, >Our hands fill up with salty water sweat, >Our hearts begin to pound without an end, >And minds soon find they're nothing more than flesh.

Why can't the right make great art as frequently as the left? /tv/ tried to discuss this but /pol/ turned it into an argument about Michael brown.

Is it better to be a great athlete or a mediocre intellectual? Which contributes more to society? Which would you rather be?

Poetry thread, post, critique, r8, h8, b8, etc. -------------------------------------------------------------- My life is over though I breathe The time has past for hope To reprieve me from the pain I struggle not to cope This is to be sane A stoic in the face of doom For all my dreams have been entombed In cold reality Eyes no longer strain to see Some salvation to set me free From the chains of a fallen world

All you would be writers of /lit/, let's see what you got, write about what the picture depicts. It could be a paragraph or two, a poem or any other form of creative writing.

what are people talking about when they use words like consciousness spirituallity pineal gland chakras ascension but they refuse to associate with any relgiion (except for like buddhism) like what's the point of it all? I see a lot of young people adopting this way of thinking and it almost reminds me of the hippies. Are they just spouting platitudes to each other, I understand there is some truths in the basis of eastern religion and most religions and they fail once you reach the actual religion part but to me all of this just seems like feel good bullshit tl;dr - what's the point of #spiritualuty and #consciousness >inb4 what's the point of anything the point of christianity is to be good and hope to get into heaven the point of going to the gym is to get closer to your goal body, you know what I mean

1: have a statistically unlikely fetish (too much time in /d/) 2: try to imagine how it might come about 3: write 18,000 words describing the insane circumstances that lead to the fulfillment of the fetish 4: character development, conflict, unusual settings, all of it wasted, because once you get to the come shot there's no need to write any further. i just wish i didn't have a development directory with about a hundred unfinished stories in it.

I'll start with this, I've just picked it up roughly a day ago. So far it's been fairly smooth to read, you don't get any real action until late in. Has anyone else read it? Anyone have any more recommendation? Anything Military goes

Was Nietzsche right? Is pain sacred? Should I wish the greatest suffering to those I respect and love? Or is the glorification of pain a form of escapism from the truth of meaninglessness?

Is there a website like Rap Genius (Genius in general), except focused primarily on lit and philosophy?

Greetings, /lit/. Political science/philosophy student here. This novel is discussed on this board pretty often, no doubt. I'm taking a graduate course on dystopian fiction. I blew through 1984 and Brave New World, this is the last book I have to read. I saved it for last because of how long it as and because I don't know if I'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the other two books. I'm starting the book in a day or two when I have a few hours to myself, what am I in for?

/Nietzsche/ General >Nietzsche applauds Caesar, Napoleon, Goethe, Dostoevski, Thucydides and the Sophists as healthier and stronger types. Source: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/nietzsche/ Who else does Nietzsche praise highly as a healthier and stronger type? Does Dostoevsky really belong on this list?
