I rarely lurk here, and to be honest, I don't read much literature in general. Nonetheless, I'm hoping /lit/ could pitch some recommendations. Pic related is the first novel I've read in years. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and it got me to thinking about getting back into fiction. Are there any recommended novels based on similar settings and themes? I'm very interested in post-apocalyptic fiction in general - mostly that based on nuclear conflicts. I definitely can't get into zombie apocalypse or similar nonsense. It's just too hard to suspend disbelief.

Tell me again why he's not right about pretty much everything regarding literature. Or are you going to argue that literature should be politicized and people shouldn't like what you don't like?

Why do people still believe in ideologies when ideologies were BTFO by Marx and Engels? Why don't people believe in social science AKA Marxism AKA communism? Why are non-Marxist perspectives taught in schools? It's like teaching 'creation science' when everyone knows that evolution is actually correct. Why do schools still teach ideologies such as liberalism and conservatism when Marxism long since proved them objectively incorrect? Is it because the bourgeoisie control the education system?

Is it ever appropriate? I'm not talking about 3 total uses in the piece of writing, I'm talking about having it as a part of a character's vocabulary.

Has anyone had any experience reading 'The Anatomy of Melancholy' by Robert Burton? If so, did you read the complete text or a truncated version? Bonus, how applicable is it to modern day psychiatry? >pic unrelated

How do you overcome the feeling of failure and inability when it comes to writing? Every time I sit down to write something I keep feeling awful.

“A few light taps upon the pane made him turn to the window. It had begun to snow again. He watched sleepily the flakes, silver and dark, falling obliquely against the lamplight. The time had come for him to set out on his journey westward. Yes, the newspapers were right: snow was general all over Ireland. It was falling on every part of the dark central plain, on the treeless hills, falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and, farther westward, softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. It was falling, too, upon every part of the lonely churchyard on the hill where Michael Furey lay buried. It lay thickly drifted on the crooked crosses and headstones, on the spears of the little gate, on the barren thorns. His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.” Beautifully chilling prose. “His heart danced upon her movements like a cork upon a tide. He heard what her eyes said to him from beneath their cowl and knew that in some dim past, whether in life or revery, he had heard their tale before.” Stunning mastery of language. “Think you're escaping and run into yourself. Longest way round is the shortest way home.” Not as captivating, but still pretty good “bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonnerronntuonnthunntrovarrhounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthurnuk!” Way to fuck it up Joyce. How did his prose and books become so bad as time went on? There's a fine line between a challenging book and an impenetrable book, filled with references and words so obscure just so he can jerk himself off.

Catholicism and the Pope

I met a catholic yesterday and we talked for some time of this and that and the Bible and God and theology and the end times. He was a good friendly man, but his explanation for the Roman Catholic Church's removal of books from the Bible (Apocrypha) left me still curious and still with questions. Why were certain books removed from the Bible, /lit/ ? Also what do you make of Pope Francis ? The catholic man said he was something of an anti-pope--not the anti Christ--, but a man put into position to deviate from the Will and Word of God. When writing, should one purposely use their work to comment on society, life, etc? Go out of their way to include profound analysis of the above concepts? Or should one write just to write, and any analysis on the Human experience or something is just a bonus?

premise: Order does not arise out of Chaos premise: Darwinian evolution requires Order to arise out of Chaos (though they often employ the term "chance" as opposed to Chaos) conclusion: Darwinian evolution is false premise: if any one part of a system is in a state of chaos, then the entire system is in a state of chaos corollary: if any one part of a system is ordered, then the entire system is ordered premise: there is order in the universe conclusion: the entire universe is ordered premise: there is universal chaos and order is an illusion contradiction: if there is universal chaos then the statement "there is universal chaos" is itself in a state of chaos, thereby rendering it untrustworthy/moot conclusion: there is not universal chaos corollary: there is universal order, as stated above. premise: we see chaos in the universe premise: there is universal order and chaos is an illusion conclusion: our perceptions deceive us about the nature of the universe; chaos/evil is a result of our shortsightedness premise: the only principle of order we can discover is mind (????) premise: the entire universe is ordered conclusion: the entire universe is governed by a universal mind premise: the universal mind is everywhere ordered premise: there is chaos/uncertainty in our minds conclusion: the chaos we perceive is a result of our minds being cut off from the universal mind which orders everything
