Is Atlas Shrugged worth reading? I am interested in it, but it's huge. Maybe there is something else that is better by Ayn Rand, or no?

I've bought both Dostoevskys The Brothers Karamazov/Crime and Punishment in the Constance Garnett translations. Eeeek.

writing songs for a female vocalist

0 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
my girlfriend is an amazing vocalist, but shes no poet. i have been writing songs for her on piano, were not trying to be famous or anything, its just a fun hobby. I really like the songs ive written for her but i cant seem to write songs for a girl to sing, all my lyrics end up sounding like blink 182 or the mountain goats or some shit, which would be fine if i could sing, but i just cant. i want to write lyrics that show off her voice but i cant seem to get it down. i dont know how to right for words that you sing with melisma. also its hard to write a song for a girl when im a guy, any pointers /lit/?

the sixth sense that marked the beginning of the evening, which disappeared completely under the flowers. the farmer's wife remained unmoved in the style of the fin de siècle, although it was only a few minutes till her dinner. a distinguished-looking young man observes us. he clatters about in the room. she gives an almost imperceptible smile. when life and property are threatened all distinctions come to and end. nina, who was lying on the dressing-table, had bags under her eyes and was covered in hair. "i have the sixth sense..." and sighed. i gave a start, inwardly, as i heard this long drawn-out groan, the lady in red fell on the telephone and with that i remembered i was still wearing my raincoat. events revealed themselves in a new light. then there was a general shaking of hands. it makes no difference to soldier whose camera, whose watch, or whose fountain pen they take. the farmer's wife stood before me with a great deal of irony and then i weep and smash a plate. the young man in the raincoat adjusts his dentures. large posters appear on the walls. that happens a lot, the lady in red had said. nina tenderly bit my large dreamy eyes. there was another shaking of hands. friends are being recruited here. the telephone is still burning. what does my body want from me? suddenly a screa rang out and nina drops her handbag. the lady in red walked across theroom discontentedly, leaving a cloud of perfume behind her, and began nervously to beat the dressing-table. the young man grabs her by the arms and places his hand over her mouth. i watched all this without saying a word. i have the sixth sense. the farmer, who until now had remained inconscpicuously in the background,

When are you going to finally finish that novel of yours? Or are you content with just being someone who reads and never become someone who writes?

Test your thnking skills! Try to read this and not reply in a derisive manor! Momentum and Stability, what can be said about these words together, well not much, they don't go together in classical physics, the more you speed up the more friction you generate the more weight you gain the more frayed your ties to gravity; etc, you compound- but there's where it gets interesting, the compounding of all these things: A, Friction; B, Weight; C: Momentum suspending resource, or gravity, if we could amplify gravity without falling for friction via stability, see iron for a good example of this, we could create artificial gravity wells that would be a huge burst of momentum... but chemistry points out to me that this is what's going on in rocket science >combustion I'm trying to say, referencing how gravity is described as 'dipping' into space, that gravity creates with these dips creating an offput of artificial space, or a springwell of natural expansion

Trying to remember what this book was called... : /

I've been trying to remember the title of a book and I can't. I read it about 10 years ago and can vaguely remember the plot. It's sort of like Under the Dome, by Stephen King but it's not that book. (The book I read came out years before UtD was published.) The town either is also under a dome or gets moved to where there's nothing around it and it's inhabitants have to deal with the situation and each other. I think, it was written by a woman but I'm not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

I just finished chapter 7 of lolita (page 29) I have been keeping track of words I don't know. here is my list: >solipsism >assuaged >imbibing >plage >merkin >paroxysm >Opalescent >staid >ribald >tryst >mimosa >arabesques >acridity >sibilant >ardent >manque >tortuous >inly >poltroon >throes >amorous >fascinum >prim >atoll >propos >accosted >sordid >taciturn >garrulous >farcical >domicile >fastidious >perfunctorily >swarthy >prophylactic >equanimity Not all of these words were entirely unknown, but enough that I felt like I had to double check the meaning. How pleb am I?

Please help me, based overlord of /lit/. There's a word, and the word basically means 'inferred indirectly by way of what you've said,' but it's just one word and sounds much nicer than this. If I was to say: "I wish I had a can of beans." I have revealed to you both that I like beans, and that I currently do not have a can of beans. I think astronomers use this process to detect objects in space by noting which stars are blocked, and then determining that there must be an object present between you and the stars in question. Thanks! Image selected at random.

I made a bet with some friends. Three of us are trying to write the absolute crappiest, most cliche, childish fantasies we can. The criteria: > Our books must me 75 pages minimum (MS Word, single space. > It must be set in a high-fantasy alternate world i.e Middle Earth, Westerns, Umlatgaesia; no hidden magic society crap like in Mortal Instruments or some shit. > Unintentionally offensive token character We have to be finished by July 1. We have four other friends who will judge and determine the winner. The winner gets $1000. How should I go about writing this shitty fantasy, /lit/? Pic unrelated. I just saw it and thought it looked ridiculous.
