Why do nerds get so anally devastated at even the most entry level cultural and philosophical analysis of works in nerd mediums (sci-fi lit, gaming, fantasy lit, anime etc) as text?

Why is Infinite Jest so hated? I haven't read it, but the growing hatred towards it is intriguing. Books like The Fountainhead were pretty good and they're considered shit-tier here.

Hey /lit/. So I'm looking for a good adventure novel. Something along the lines of Journey to the west, which I really enjoyed. Anyone know anything similar? Also, on another note, what is /lit/'s opinion on Journey to the west?

Rate my summer readings: > ???? No Longer Human (1948), by ?? ? Dazai Osamu. > ?? The Quilt (1907), by ?? ?? Tayama Katai. > ???? Into a Black Sun (1968), by ?? ? Kaik? Takeshi. > ????? The Life of an Amorous Woman (1686), by ?? ?? Ihara Saikaku. > ???????? Beauty and Sadness (1964), by ?? ?? Yasunari Kawabata. Except for the first one, I read the Spanish translations. I read Dazai's masterpiece in English.

What are philosophies to follow for someone who feels like an loner/outsider due to not being a part of the masses' hivemind and not having a similar mentality to the common person? >inb4 hurr durr OP is not le sheeple he's a special snowflake xD I'd expect more from this board. We have all heard the phrase 'so random' in relation to certain attitudes, actions, and even nouns or words in certain contexts. Why? What does it mean? How do we actually determine which things qualify as this sort of 'random' and is it actually random or are there patterns we can find in the content that we almost subconsciously identify as falling beneath this banner? For instance, could we make a list of words or nouns that are prone to becoming 'so random?' 'Gravy' comes to mind, though I am not sure why.
