What does /lit/ think of Thomas Ligotti - particularly his work "Conspiracy agains the Human Race"? Is life really a meaningless and futile charade leading to death? Ought we kill ourselves just to spare the pointless suffering? >http://www.amazon.com/The-Conspiracy-against-Human-Race/dp/0984480277/ref=pd_sim_b_3/177-6744915 -8662005&tag=rationskepti-20&tag=rationskepti-20

Hello, /lit/. I plan on doing some writing over break, and I need some help. I am in a need of some book suggestions over various mythologies; something along the lines of Japanese, Chinese, Celtic, Arabic, etc. Anything but Greek/Roman. If anyone knows any reputable/scholarly site over mythology as well would be nice.

I've always been curious as what happened to Gandalf in LOTR after he fought with the Balrog. How did he get revived? And how did he get the status of The White? Did a higher being just decide to give it to him? Did he die and come back as a new being? In the Lotr world who decides what ranking wizards get? Can there be more than one White wizard at the same time? How many levels of wizards are there exactly.

Would you guys consider visual novels to be literature? I think at least some of them are right up there with the best of written stuff.

microbiology major here. before college, i studied philosophy passionately. a shitty english seminar freshman year sucked the life force out of me and made me never want to take subjective humanities bullshit classes again. What should I expect from philosophy classes at the uni level? More bullshit like my "Great Love Stories" class? I seriously feel like I've lost my passion for learning because all i do is spend my free time writing essays on the role of class in "pride and prejudice" or black feminism in "the color purple" and i have no time to read what I'd like. I want to know if taking formal classes in philosophy is a total pain compared to just reading on my own.

Hey, /phi/ I was planning on going to /reddit/philosophy and ask for an advice regarding philosophy, but as I skimmed through some of their threads I realized it's greatly populated by science and atheism gobbling faggots. Which was sort of related with what I was thinking of asking. They claim that anything before 1980s is irrelevant, they babble more about physics and chemistry than metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, epistemology and logic, furthermore, they send everyone to this LessWrong site, which says that Plato and Kant ought to be substituted for some faggy science nerds. Basically I hate anything that has to do with - materialism, naturalism, atheism, neuro-anything, reductionism, dogmatic STEM babies and anyone that cites hawking, sagan and any of the neoatheists as their source of reasoning. I am fairly new to philosophy. I've read a few dialogues of Plato, and will continue with Aristotle. My question - what philosophers and schools of philosophy do you think would suite me best, considering my repugnancies above?

Ive just finish reading stranger in a strange land.(Have also read Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Starship Troopers). Heinlein said in his will that his ideas were contianed in those 3 novels, almost i must say i enjoyed them(The moon, much much more than the others) there are a lot of things i dont grok, i mean i like the ideas about responsibility and free will but some of his shit is just political facism disguised with personal liberty. I must say I dont grok at all What do the other heinlein fags think?

David Foster Wallace was a terrible person. He even planned to murder someone over woman. Why does /lit/ still endorse him? His books are written only to show off.

A few questions for you /lit/izens: What point of view you prefer in a novel and why? In your opinion an insight point can be good in a novel where we follow an high number of characters? I know it can be done, i'm speaking of the difficulty. Have you read a good example of it? Nightmare mode question: Can you justify the novel who have a fake character like Gatsby; heart of darkness; Mr. Hyde and so on? Or it was just a fashion of the time? Reading all the post at once seems like a fukkin test, sorry guys XD

I came over Carl Jungs The Red Book and as i looked at the price it was 187.70$. Thats pretty expensive for a book. Then i found the "readers edition" and it was only 38.96$. So whats the deal? Why is so damn expensive? And is it worth the money?
