I just wanted some opinions on this subject. How would you rank the 4 entertainment mediums by mental stimulation? Anime ( not in my native language so have to pay attention to subtitles ) Video Games ( I know this varies depending on the game, but just rank it, ok? ) Reading ( Novels, not magazines or the internet) Watching TV or Movies

Life is too short. Don't walk - RUN - away from this book. Masochist that I am, I got more than two-thirds through the book and finally could not stand it anymore. Amerika is about this 16 year old boy named Karl who gets exiled to America by his German parents after impregnating a household servant. Just as he was bewildered and passive during the aforementioned fornication (the maid overtly seduced him), Karl remained so for the rest of the book (at least what I read). Repeatedly, and without seeming to learn from his experiences, Karl was screwed over by fates that even the most lubberly of recreants could have avoided with little to no fancy footwork. I have no idea what Kafka was going for in this book except possibly to fan the flames of existential angst, except his main character never really caught on. I enjoyed The Metamorphosis and The Trial much more. Skip Amerika. Trust me. In other news that is entirely unrelated to this book or any other, I have coined a new acronym: "ROFOR" for "Right-On Fist of Righteousness" which is what you show to strangers at a respectable distance, usually outside, when you want to smoothly, yet understatedly remark positively on their feats of derring-do. Again, my genius is documented. You're welcome.

You that never-ending, throbbing pain you get in your head whenever you sit down and find yourself staring at the blinking line that appears after your previous type, and before the first word you type, because you can't come up with any ideas for an article or short story, and you feel your life and as a result, everything you hold dear within it, is about to plummet straight down the shitter? Yeah. How do you do literary types push on through all that dread and uncertainty?

I went through my whole life only knowing one person who actual read this book, the person who introduced me to it. Please tell me someone else read this and enjoyed it. Also post any cool thought provoking sci fi novels. I already read the basics like Stanislaw Lem books, Space Odyssey series, Neuromancer (which is terribad) etc.

Hey /lit/ a long time ago i started reading a post-appocalyptic book. kind of a zombie type book but the infected people died and were reanimated by some sort or parasitic alien thing that controlled them. the first chapter started off with the main character in a bomb shelter/bunker in his back yard. the 2nd or third chapter introduced a female character who was a junkie or something running from some thugs/infected animals in a zoo. i know the book won some awards, i think maybe "best new author" or something. i was quite sure the name was "The Risen" or just "Risen", ive been searching for about an hour but can't find it at all. any one have any idea??

Quick /lit/, educate me. Write a small verse of prose that demonstrates the epitome of pretentiousness, so I know what to look for and what to avoid. Picture mildly related, a supposedly pretentious book

The world inside by Silverberg - recommended a few days ago here in lit. Are you kiddin me ? It's very simple prose with not very witty ideas and speculations. The world inside and outside conquered by different religions, both inhuman and retrograded. Nigga please

Just finished the first chapter of my science fiction novel. Go ahead, /lit/, tell me how terrible it is. pic unrelated. Isaac was pulled from his sleep. His body clenched violently. Reality returned to him, cruel as ever. His mother was gone. It had only been a dream. The boy shut his eyes desperately, begging the dream to return, and his mother's voice with it. Then the door slid open, and his father was standing before him. “We're here, kido.” The red planet grew quickly. The crew of Avon 7 stood silently before Tartarus, the proud giant of the Nebula Termina solar system. It was covered by a vast, swirling blanket of crimson. As they neared, the clouds of blood spread past every corner of the observatory window. Isaac gripped his mother's pendant tightly. The planet's growth did not slow; the ship was maintaining cruise speed. He felt Tartarus would engulf him. A flash of blue spread across the window as the captain engaged the forward thrusters. Avon 7 was finally slowing to orbital speed. Isaac hoped the pendant would not break. He trembled with implacable excitement, inflamed with both eagerness and dread. The blue plasma parted like a curtain, revealing Cora Rune. The moon was the small, dark eye of a monstrous storm. Tartarus looked a great red sea in tumult. The planet's surface was hidden by perpetual storm. But beneath Cora Rune, a single hurricane persisted—fixed, in spite of the chaos swirling about it. Clouds enclosed the black circle in a sphere, rotating with the uniformity of a fan. Lord Grantham gripped the shoulder of his fellow nobleman General Havoc. “We've arrived, my friend. Our search nears its end.” “Perhaps. Truly, I hope you are right,” his old mentor replied. But in his soul, Havoc knew Grantham was right—and by know means did he hope it.

Hey /lit/. I have a project i need help on, but its a bit long winded: pic unrelated ***heres the tl;dr help me create a fake person.*** problem: In my art class, we have to do either one of two things: 1: sign our soul to Vans, get shoes from them, and draw on them, we can win money or something, but the contract (i dont have it handy) states that us, our parents, our 'heirs' and any relatives cannot sue vans for pretty much any reason. or... 2: the alternative project (punishment) is to do a project on a famous graphic designer. Me and my friend, after reading the contract, have chosen the second option. Now, the teacher is a complete idiot. eg. the class is centered primarily around photoshop, obviously computers are required. you would expect a teacher who teaches a class that requires them, to know a little about them. She once told us, and i quote, "you cant play angry birds, or text people, because the wi-fi cables in the walls are too old." Knowing this, me and sed friend have decided to make a fake person, because she is an idiot. We have come up with the name 'David Cheng' and are going way out of our way, just for laughs. Doing 8 times the amount of work required, just to fuck with her. We are using on this page, pictures of Jimmy Wong, youtube musician, because his pictures are easy to access, and hes not extremely well known. give us a hand, and write a random bio for this guy. So far, he lives in sf, so if you want to be realistic, use schools/work/locations/people from that ares. if thats too much to ask, just use a filler name, and me and my friend will go back over it later. Thanks for the potential help.

hello /lit/ I have been reading up on Schopenhauerism and I plan to take the full dive soon. I had already came to the conclusion that God is absent from this world. There is no God here. I only recently have been able to state that fact. I am an 18 year old African American Male who goes to church. I feel very out of place somehow now. I can't even open the bible anymore. I have family telling me my living situation brought on by my lack of desire is horrible. I pretty much gave up on depending on God to take care of this world and nor do I want to help people attain the knowledge I posses because they would no doubt know the sad reality I know. I do desire to be a servant to my fellow man now that I know what I know. To let people go on with there low pleasure lives hoping they never learn of this conclusion even if it means lies and murder. I will Do volunteer work around the world and In my own community and hospital. ****So to add to this I want to become a nurse to do more. Since I can't afford college I need help on books that can help me gain the knowledge of a college LPN(2yr) and then a RN(registered nurse)(4yr) Maybe some paramedic skills too. since I don't have money for college so I plan on studying on my own and take the NCLEX-RN test but I don't think I will get hired unless I go to college even if I know the same as a RN. I really don't know any scholars in the high population density low wealth minority location of my community so I will be also trying to join mensa and indulge in there social networking once I get the money to take the test. "If" I get a job that is. **Any recommendations for books or advice on my nursing path?

I've had this book lying on my night table, having read the first challenge (talk to 5 random people) and i always manage to talk to less than 5 people, so i put it down. but anyway, back to the girl. i already had coffee with her and i talk to her in between classes, but i really don't wanna fuck this up. tell me if this kind of book works in these cases.

I've fallen in love with Booth Tarkington over the course of three late nights and several long trips on the Honolulu public transit system. His portrayals of adolescence are almost painfully relatable, his style of narration carries the reader along in the manner of a master storyteller at a dinner party, and he's a damn good chronicler of the beginning of the modern age. Do you guys have any unfairly unsung authors you want to take a moment to appreciate/praise/lose your shirt over in a frenzy of fanboying?

If you're a philosophy professor, don't you have infinite freedom to study/research literally anything with impunity, regardless of field - and make contact with external organisations literally willy nilly? Unlike say a Chemistry professor, to whom the faculty would fire him for working with the Dance department.
