The Wheel of Time

7 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: wheel of time the eye of the world (...).jpg]
Okay, hi there /lit/. I don't read, but I was given a 14-volume softcover set of the Wheel of Time series for my birthday. It took me 2 and a half months to read the first one, maybe because it's just hard reading for someone not used to it I don't know. I thought it was pretty entertaining though, it kept my attention for nearly the whole book. What I'd like to know is how /lit/ rates this series compared to its peers? My opinion doesn't count for squat since I'm uneducated about books, so if I should put this down now and pick up something else that'd be good to know. I mean, does this ever get any better or worse going forward? I see that it took over 20 years to write this whole series, so I imagine that there's probably a major change in content style over the span of all 14 books.

>Ontological Uncertainty So, somehow this concept seems to escape me. I thought I understood it, but I had a little chat with my Prof today, and he said that I was confusing the concept of ontological uncertainty on a diegetic level (which is not what McHale talks about) as opposed to the concept on a formal level of fiction vs. reality. I am not sure I understand this. So, what is your take on McHales concept of Ontological uncertainty as the main aspect of postmodern fiction? Please enlighten me.

Are there any good books on building self-esteem? Or emulating the effects. I need some mental exercises or something and I'm too poor for therapy.

Do you know of any other books that display the practise of politics? I want to read of treachery, plotting, ruthless and bold powerplays. Like the George Martin fantasy series.

Who are the most edgy people in literature, /lit/? My vote goes to Renzo Novatore: http://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/renzo-novatore-toward-the-creative-nothing#toc24 Bonus points because he lived at least as edgy as he wrote.

Hey guys. Not sure if this is related, but I need to come up with ideas for a 9 min short story. One of the ideas I've come up with is about a modern witch who still lives among society as a therapist, but I can't think of any key conflict in the short film. There needs to be a cliffhanger and a resolution within the 9 mins. Any ideas for short stories?

Which is grammatically correct? English is not my first language, but I feel an author got a sentence wrong in a book I'm reading. "His FM receivers power cells are fresh, so that Madame sounds like a faithful but miniaturized copy of her studio self" Original "His FM receivers power cells are fresh, so that Madame sounds like a faithful, but miniaturized copy of her studio self" What I've been taught is correct.

This book, I now realise, it one of Wallace's best. It still boggles me that so many fans haven't read it yet, even if books are generally slow burners or sleeper hits. Rereading it, I've even discovered some really good chapters I'd forgotten about. And yes, Chapter 22 is probably still the best.

All I can remember of the plot was people who studied history (I believe they called Historians) would become immortal and/or learn to travel through time. A friend loaned it to me and has since dropped off the face of the earth so I can't ask him. It was an excellent read and I'd love to sit down with it again. Curse my memory!

I had a thread yesterday about some snags i had in a novel ive written, mostly i dont know what i should call stuff...thats were you come in. I need some suggestions on alternate names on stuff. Lets start with "druids": i guess the closest thing in "reality" would be the Spartans from halo or spectres from mass effect. Also i need ideas for their logo.

I always see you guy's bashing fantasy writers as fat, worthless retards. Have you heard of Robert Jordan(wrote the majority of the "Wheel of Time" series? Graduated from military highschool and college, two tours in Vietnam, degree in physics and was hired on as a nuclear engineer by the US Navy. I recently started reading this series of books and ran into this info, found it really interesting.

Why do people like Hemingway, who acknowledge the fact that authentic life is impossible and that there is no real point to living not kill themselves? What is fueling them to keep on living in spite of life being pointless? (Eventually, Hemingway did kill himself, but for other reasons and years after he has made that realization)

Do you see a lot of misattributed (is that a word?) quotes of your favorite writers every now an then? Here people always post shitty self help excerpts with Fernando Pessoa's name at the end. Anyone who's read him knows it couldn't possibly be his. Aside from a light sense of insult -- haven't gotten to plain indifference yet -- it's incredible how bad people's taste and capacity to discriminate are. What do you think about it?

I need to write a 4 page long paper on British poetesses and women novelists of the first half of the 20th century discussing their literary achievements and focusing on their major works, themes and techniques. Want to chip in some ideas and stuff that are "must have" in this kind of essay? I missed some lectures at the uni and the subject itself is really not my thing. So far I think I'm gonna use Virginia Woolf, Mina Loy, Marianne Moore. Does Doris Lessing count? I was thinking of using The Grass Is Singing. >please respond
