Science Fiction Saturday!! Let's get some scifi ideas flowing this morning. I just thought this up now. -------------------------------------- People are born, and a computer is put in their head. They are brought up to believe everything on their eyes is real. (eyes are transparent computer screens, the computer in your head displays stuff on your eyes) And then in that world, they'll be one man who's born normal. That's the main character. Continue.

I have been thinking about something for a long time: reason/logic versus emotion/sentiment. Everything that we feel can be(or will be) explained in terms of chemical reactions and whatnot. What you and I are thinking and typing is nothing more than something strictly biological running through our brains. In fact, if biotechnology advances far enough one day, perhaps I can dissect your mind and change what you think. Erase some experiences and add some to make your feelings mirror mine. What do you think of this hypothesis of mine? I am considering turning it into a book.

Dear /lit/, It has come to my attention that, far from being a board where literature is loved, this place has been the harbour of hatred for longer than I want to remember. Every author is hated, everything sucks, nobody seems to like anything or even be able to appreciate any books or authors. This, of course, can't be true. This is why I suggest the following: name an author you hate, and then name an author you love. Let's do it. Pic related: it's my favourite French author and he is mostly ignored, disliked, or unknown by the French for very French reasons.

Why are you against egalitarianism? Isn't that an oxymoron? You think you will end up at the top of the hierarchy? Dominating everyone and everything? Think again. It is in everyone's benefit (except for the sociopaths lurking among us) to be for true total equality.

Looking for a book title

help me out here real quick, /lit/ I'm looking for the the title of a book. In the book itself there is just one event - an everday event in the metro, I think, in Paris, but it is described in about 50 different ways It's like "Die Minute mit Paul McCartney" by Friedrich Christian Delius, but by a French author, I think picture completely irrelevant

Best audio books? I've been jogging to audio books instead of listening to music and it's way better. I've listened to Being Earnest and Dirk Gently, and the performances were great, but the reading I had for 3 men in a boat was shit. So.. more like the ones I enjoyed? Or quality audiobooks in general.

Does anyone like memorizing poetry? I've been reading about the method of loci and ancient arts of memory and gave it a shot yesterday, I was able to memorize a short Blake poem in under 30 minutes, I have no prior training (I had heard the tyger before though). Memory palaces are immensely powerful for lists and speeches but poems are a bit more difficult. Still works wonders though. see: http://www.utexas.edu/research/memoria/Ad_Herennium_Passages.html As a historian, I can't believe this method was never taught to me in school. Every history major (or doctor, or lawyer) should be taught how to construct a memory palace. Surprisingly, this is very fun and rewarding, I never thought memorization could be fun. Anyone like committing poems, historical data or literary passages to memory? What techniques do you use?

Hey /lit/ Have you read Nabokov's short story 'Symbols and Signs'? What's your interpretation of it? It's pretty short, link is here: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/1948/05/15/1948_05_15_031_TNY_CARDS_000214135?currentPage=1
