I go to the Nelson-Atkins god damn museum and there is a fucking redneck blocking my view of Monet. Please - let me know if there are any of you assholes out there. I need uppity faggots like you to drink uppity beers with me and praise my writing. even lngarat

"I’m walking on the edge of the street while the sidewalk is muffled by a few feet of muted white puff." I'm stuck on that last word -- 'fluff' sounds a bit too predictable, while 'puff' is a nicer word to describe the texture of this snow. Also, not really stuck on the 'muffled' yet, although that's the feeling I want convey, the sidewalk being suffocated by the snow (although not in a violent way).

Sup /lit/, I just finished the first draft of my novel (at 75k words). It feels kind of surreal to have managed to actually bring something to a conclusion, even though it's not finished by any means. How's your writing going?

Her face as she walks past mine in the hallways makes me think of waters of despairs. Her sadness perspirations follow her like a cloud full of tears and sweat. Her body is like a pool of water that is made from sad sorrows, One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in his bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug. And like this bug she was sad like Gregor Samsa was also sad. Her favorite movie was the Metorphomasis by Jimmer Kafka (Jimmy Kafkington). Her face and her chin, as her face was a part of her chin, fell and as that feel she felt like a feeling of feelicious had hurt upon hurt once more.

What do you call "good writing", /lit/? I believe something is well written when it accurately conveys through the use of prose some impression the writer is trying to make us feel. For instance, Zola wanted to depict his contemporary society in a shocking manner, and manages to do so, hence he's a good writer. Pratchett wants to parody everything and makes the reader laugh, hence he's a good writer. Now a good writer may not always write works of literary merit; that is to say, we look back at Zola's work to get an interesting insight of what France looked like in the late 19th century, but Pratchett may not be remembered in the future. Is there a formal definition of good writing (and if that is the case, am I spouting bullshit)? If not, do you share my opinion?

Honestly, I never realised how poor my reading speed was until I tried to get into it. I just started reading 1984 and this speed test told me it'll be a while till I end, and I think it'll take even longer than that. I'm enjoying reading it, but I feel bad having a 40 minute sitting on only getting through 10 or so pages. I don't want to give a sob story, but let's just say my parents didn't really read with me when I was young, so is there a way I could maybe develop my reading ability? I'm not talking about an instant solution, I mean something I can do to train myself. I know you don't want to deal with this new shit, but I really want to get into /lit/

Japanese History

Hey /lit, I am in the mood to learn some Japanese history. In the past I took a course on modern Japanese history from Meiji restoration to modern times and I would really like to delve into some of the older stuff. I would particularly like to learn about Ashikaga period- Tokugawa. So far I have only read Conrad Shirokauer's A Brief History of Japanese Civilization 2nd edition. I have tried to search your wiki and found lots of interesting Japanese lit to read but not any history. I was surprised how hard it is to find decent history on Japan despite the popularity of Samurai in western popular culture.

Cyberpunk

Is there any Cyberpunk-ish stuff out there that transcends the silly fantasy+noir trappings of the regular shit? To me the concept seems less escapist and more fertile for legit exploration than usual fantasy masturbation, but as far as I know most writers tend to focus on fetishizing the aesthetic instead of focusing on its accompanying 'themes'. basically, is there REAL cyberpunk literature? or is Infinite Jest-esque stuff as close as it gets?

Hey /lit/, call me lazy, but I like to write yet lack the motivation to actually sit down and do it. I write best under pressure (aka school) but since I've graduated, I really don't have much external motivation. All I really want to hear about is how you guys go about writing, such as your planning process and writing environment or whatever else you think is important in the hopes that it'll motivate me some more.

Hey /lit/, Since I can't think of a better board to begin such a thread, post your favourite interesting/humorous quotes from history! "The machine-gunners' dreams of point blank fire into serried masses of Emus were soon dissipated. The Emu command had evidently ordered guerrilla tactics..." - Dominic Louis Serventy (1904-1988), Australian ornithologist commenting on the Great Emu War, a failed military operation intended to cull the emu population "But, are they allowed to do that?" - Ferdinand I (1793-1875), in response to being told the Viennese marching on the palace were making a revolution

Here's another critique my writing thread for you /lit/ Its the first paragraph to a short story I'm writing. It's follows the events of a minor character in a novel idea I've been gestating. It's set between two warring fictional nations. In the short story the main character ends up executing a young girl by firing squad, who was part of a captured resistance group. http://pastebin.com/qfPJz5N9

I've spent the last few days trying to get through 1984, but I just can't do it. I've never felt effected like this by a book before. I'm disturbed in some weird primal way, and I just can't read it anymore. Is stopping now acceptable, or I am failing the book? Are there any good books that you couldn't finish reading?

Hey /lit/, what's that quote about how how setting your sights higher than what you can realistically achieve is the only way to actually achieve what you can realistically achieve?
