Descended on a staircase crafted by a shooting star And gilded in the glitter from the chase, Her bare feet sew the dust, like diamonds, scattered in the sands; Her face shines in the darkness, Saturn's rings inside her hands; So skilled with captivation, she ignites those brilliant bands, And, delighted, drapes the cinch about her waist. Instinctively, the dance begins, an orbit all its own; A galaxy made miniature on Earth. The graceful flits and flurries of a Faerie in her realm; The swift and certain deftness of a Captain at her helm; Our Lady holding court, a sight so sure to overwhelm; And, captivated, we observe the birth. What seems to be eternity elapses in a blink, The rings grow weak and shed their brilliant light; And then a weary smile joins the glimmer in her eye, And with a modest curtsy, casts her gaze back to the sky, To ascend upon a sunbeam at the seagulls' morning cry, And, privileged, we await another night. -- comments, criticisms, and MOAR POETRY

What makes this book so special? I read it, I admire Burroughs style of writing, but I cannot seem to find a deeper meaning , anything profound really. Why is this rated so highly? Please help me, /lit/!

Why so many people mistake "you're" with "your"?

So for a long time I've been what I can only describe as an amateur editor/consultant. My buddies like to make indie movies and they always handed me the scripts before anything else. I'd say stuff like >No you don't need a montage of robberies here, just show them coming back from a robbery and imply that it went better or worse than the last one. or >expand upon this character. She's interesting but not properly motivated and it wasn't long before strangers were asking me to read over their plays, papers, and short stories. After all that junk, I figured that I could do better. I've been thinking a lot about story ideas and you know... I never had proper respect for the people who made up plots. They might have sucked at writing, but I'll be damned if they didn't have a sound plot in mind. Are all plots and story ideas so humdrum seeming when you first start out? All of my plot ideas that I know I could write sound about the same. Look at these: >Abnormal loner is manipulated and taken advantage of by those around him. This causes him to grow into a bitter person without morals who trusts no one. >Abnormal loner kills someone for money. Story follows abnormal loner's life and career as hitman displaying the erosion of morality and its perceived benefits as well as downsides. >Abnormal loner wishes strongly to integrate back into normal society and life. He can't because he has spent too long living as a feral abnormal loner. Like what the fuck. they all look like the same story... which wouldn't be that bad of an idea but I think it would be best to start out small rather than to do 3 different things at once for my first novella. I'd like to eventually be a good writer, I just... need a little help is all. What do you guys think?

Let us imagine that every book ever written was published anonymously. Every book would stand on its own merits and themes without the context of the author's previous works. What would the world of literature look like?

Why is this book such shit in comparison to The Idiot and Brothers Karamazov?

"You shut up," said Bonzo. "Shut up and stand out of the way." He began to take off his uniform. "Naked and wet and alone, Ender, so we're even. I can't help that I'm bigger than you. You're such a genius, you figure out how to handle me." He turned to the others. "Watch the door. Don't let anyone else in." When Ender saw Bonzo's stance, his heart sank. Bonzo had also taken classes. And probably more recently than Ender. His reach was better, he was stronger, and he was full of hate. He would not be gentle. He will go for my head, thonght Ender. He will try above all to damage my brain. And if this fight is long, he's bound to win. His strength can control me. If I'm to walk away from here, I have to win quckly, and permanently. He could feel agan he sickening way that Stilson's bones had given way. But this time it will be my body that breaks, unless I can break him first. Ender stepped back, flipped the showerhead so it turned outward, and turned on pure hot water. Almost at once the steam began to rise. He turned on the next and the next. "I'm not afraid of hot water," said Bonzo. His voice was soft. But it wasn't the hot water that Ender wanted. It was the heat. His body still had soap on it, and his sweat moistened it, made his skin more slippery than Bonzo would expect. The mist from the showers dimmed the room, and the sweat was streaming down Ender's body. Now, before the soap is carried off me. Now, while I'm still too slippery to hold. Bonzo's tight, hard ribs came against Ender's face, and his hands slapped against his back, trying to grip him. But Ender twisted, and Bonzo's hands slipped. In an instant Ender was completely turned, yet still inside Bonzo's grasp. The classic move at this moment would be to bring up his heel into Bonzo's crotch, but for that move to be effective required too much accuracy, and Bonzo expected it. He was already rising onto his toes, thrusting his hips backward to keep Ender from reaching his groin.

/lit/ Now obviously, I'm no grammar Nazi because my grammar is certainly not perfect. But, does it seem like some authors just say, "Fuck it"? I mean, look at "The Road"... There aren't even quotation marks and that book was a best seller. Does this bug you at all?

So I finally got around to knocking Atlas Shrugged off my "to read list" and I've got to say... It was crap. Full of contradictions in the philosophy and the philosophy breaks up the plot terribly with stupid multipage monologues which could be explained in half a page... Pointless

I'm sorry to defile the Master's honor , but I really need to if other people share my view , as I'm afraid that perhaps I'm not /fit/ for /lit/. Am i the only one who found Tolkien's landscape descriptions to be extremely excessive , and for the most parts contributing nothing to the value of the books? I don't refer to the unique descriptions of Lorien or Minas Tirith and the like , but to the endless description of every ordinary square mile that the characters traverse on. I just really don't see why i need to read about how a crevice looks like for the thousandth time , nor the shape of every single cliff in middle-earth , or the very same tone of the wind when it rustles the leaves of a tree. I truly believe these lines would've been better spent on expanding the plot or the depth of the characters.
