Is it possible to be taken seriously and "unpretentiously" by regular people without having to be in the elite realm of the academic ivory tower?

Can /lit/ direct me to some books about creative writing/craft of writing/literary technique? Extra points if they are from before the 20th century.

So I want to read some Murakami but have never read anything by him before, except for the short story 'TV People'. Where to start?

I don't know is this is an appropriate place to ask so I apologize in advance, but could anyone PLEASE help me find the 3rd edition of Craig R. Smith's Rhetoric and Human Consciousness: A History to download/otherwise read online? I procrastinated super hard on ordering books for class and only ordered it about a week ago so it still isn't here yet, and I have a test on Monday over some of the chapters. I'm super desperate and again, I'm really sorry if this isn't a good place to ask.

Hey /lit/ I'm a songwriter struggling with lyrics. Can you recommend some poetry for inspiration? If it helps I predominantly write for a grunge band and would say Kurt is my idol. Please don't send me to /mu/ they're all cunts.

One of the best and most truthful opinions on poetry: "The greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor. It is the one thing that cannot be learned from others; it is also a sign of genius, since a good metaphor implies an eye for resemblance." -Aristotle, De Poetica, 322 B.C And one of the worst opinions coming from a critic who influenced in a negative way (directly or indirectly) much of poetry which is being made today: "Music begins to atrophy when it departs too far from the dance… poetry begins to atrophy when it gets too far from music.” Ezra Pound, ABC of Literature. Conclusion: In terms of poetry, metaphor and imagery will always be more important than the sound of words. If both requisites can be conciliated, much better, but the imagery should never be sacrificed for the sake of sound.

So Venice in medieval/early modern times was all sassy n shit but it was also an immoral smelly machiavellistic hole filled with scheming and depravity, which would probably make a sweet backdrop for a tight novel. are there any such historic novels set in Venice ?

What are you currently reading, /lit/?

Does /lit/ have any influence at all on trends in literature in a microscopic way? Probably not, right? Sometimes I worry that the thoughtless things that get spread around here will spread beyond /lit/ and into the real world. I mean, think about how groundless most arguments are on this board. And consider how most people shit on authors for no credible reason...imagine if people came here and took these as the opinions of experts and then internalized these baseless thoughts. Jesus...it's a scary thought. I just don't want this place to influence anybody beyond some book recommendations. Ever.

my ideal woman is a parasitic jew vampire who like the oligarchs i work for in perpetual wage serfdom will suck my worthless monopoly capital and lifesblood from me in exchange for her boring emotionally dead WASP body and as our youths fade with our various sacs limbs extremities, and other assorited body chunks congeal and harden into callous or sag and rot away as is their own particular wont while we spend our "free" or "pleasure" time in mute dumb silence like cows grazing and stupidly staring at whatever gay spectacle of corn appears before us

Can you recommend (yes, I read the sticky, I'm sorry. It didn't help) a novel that's easily accessible for someone who isn't too hardcore a reader, but is original and interesting? I like works with unique concepts. Slaughterhouse Five is a great example. It's odd, unique, not too tough a read, but still has some substantial content. I'm sorry if I'm not contributing to the e/lit/ist society around here, but it really would be appreciated.

Is there anyone on /lit/ who'd like to write with a partner? Like, maybe write shorter forms and compile them in a book? Or just write for the sake of writing, having one-another as someone to bounce off ideas and to motivate each other? I'm currently on my phone, but I'd be glad to post some of my work later if there are people interested in this

I'm reading a series books at the moment, and the copies I have are mismatched. I'm OCD about that sort of shit, so I'm planning to buy all the books as a complete set when they're all out, and dispose of the copies I'm using now. In one book I have so far >spilt wine on the pages >accidently rubbed cigarette ash over the pages >scratched my ass and tuned the pages, leaving a faint brown stain on the corners >rubbed smegma down 1 page >cracked the spine beyond all recognition >dribbled on it

out of blue I've felt a need to read some high/heroic fantasy after finishing several utterly grave books not Martin/Bakker's stuff with its realistic view on things aka "let's make it look real, guize!" (also Bekker doesn't write that well, honestly) something about a grand quest with a party of heroes wearing shiny armor and wizard clothes (maybe I'm exaggerating but you get me, I hope) but written decently inb4 Tolkien, Hobb, Abercrombie and Jordan

good or not good? Summertime bliss the sky blue and cloudless the flowers blossoming alive the bees to and fro the hive to and fro, to and fro reaping what I sow, reaping what I sow. Wintertime darkness the horses plowing harness.
