Come on, don't be shy. I'll start: Of the dark past A child is born; With joy and grief My heart is torn. Calm in his cradle The living lies. May love and mercy Unclose his eyes! Young life is breathed On the glass; The world that was not Comes to pass. A child is sleeping: An old man gone. O, father forsaken, Forgive your son!

I just finished the Grapes of Wrath and have changed my outlook on life a lot. The last few chapters are really beautiful. Anyone here that's read it and has views?

I'm interested in reading more philosophical non-fiction. I have minimal knowledge of Socratic philosophy and ethics, however, I am really interested in learning more and expanding my knowledge of other philosophers and philosophy in general. There is such a breadth of information available about this subject that I'm not sure where to begin! Can anyone from /lit/ recommend a few decent book titles/documentaries on this subject? -Thanks in advance.

If you can't name the favorite food of the main character's great grandmother's first boyfriend then you may as well not be writing.

Marquis de Sade said - "I've already told you: the only way to a woman's heart is along the path of torment. I know none other as sure." he wansnt talking about physical torment, right? But what kind of torment?

Around me they converse and sip and laugh like hyenas. Coats draped over chairs like expensive tapestry. Jewellery glimmering as though I am subject to beautiful hallucinations. Glasses pressed eagerly to lips. Drunks make easier targets; already I have selected my prey. I only take from the overly rich. In bars where the cost of a round would feed the poor for a week. If one can afford to pay over four sheets for a beer, one can afford to be robbed. No women though. They serve a different purpose.

I'm considering reading The Recognitions this summer, but I won't have internet access. How much will I miss by not being able to follow annotations or look things up as I go? From what I've seen it's pretty dense with obscure allusions and I don't want to jump in if I won't be able to appreciate it properly. Thoughts?

What do you think about Sartre's existetialism and his conference: The existentialism is a humanism? Be constructive, what do you agree with and what not?

Modern philosophy

I'm reading Russell and having a blast. His writing style is way more entertaining than I expected. Unfortunately he gives the shaft to the continental philosophers after a certain point, and when he does talk about them he's mostly interested in whether he agrees with their systems of ethics. Existentialism is not mentioned at all, not even in the chapter on Nietzsche. Where should I turn for a more even-handed treatment of modern philosophy, preferably one that discusses unusual ideas about God?

Am I the only one getting the feeling that the actual book of Gatsby was a lot less colorful than the new movie that came out? For example, when I read the book in High School, I got the impression that the chapter with the party was treated like an apartment frat party, with 4 rooms. What the trailers show, though, looks like it came out of the DVD release of Metropolis, spanning a whole tower. Feel free to ridicule OP for speedreading2hard, and talk about any other problems you have (if any) with the adaptations.

Recommend me a non-fiction Korean book please, or several. Anything that covers the past 100 years of both North and South Korean history. Primarily the war and its aftermath, but I'd be interested in learning anything about the two, such as their culture and way of life or. Anyone seen the movie "The Chaser"? Watched it last night at 2am alone. Headphones on. What a fucking movie. >http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WFtGoagH4U >tfw Also, fuck Zerg.

Dear /lit/, I just bought an e-reader and I would like to add some books to it. I've been browsing through the lit wiki and I'm aware that there are folders that you can download from each category, they contain the books that are listed on the wiki page. However, I cannot find them. Could someone please provide the links? Thankyou :)
