This sequence of sentences from Darling is 2deep4me. Anybody want to give their interpretation? Obviously he's pondering existence and whether he is or is not.

Hey /lit/ So I've never really been much of a reader, and I've only read a handful of books that weren't for some class I was taking. But I'm looking to get into it and I thought I'd come here for a starting point. I'm looking for something dark, mindbending, and surreal. I don't have a frame of reference for literature so my favorite film is Synecdoche, New York, if that helps at all. Pic related, one of the few books I've read and also my favorite.

So I just finished reading these back to back. Both of these are amazing, IMO, but I think 1984 wins simply by the easiness to imagine the 1984 world. My trouble with 'Brave New World' is that they didn't properly depict the trouble with the lower class. George regarded this several times. Brave New World seemed to only touch on it; though they both said the lower will submit simply because they will submit. Anyway, which do you prefer /lit/?

What if malls and cities were mostly populated with book stores, art shops, and galleries instead of clothing shops? I went down to the city yesterday and literally 95% of stores were clothing/shoe/jewellery stores. Why are people so obsessed with clothes? what a stupid culture we live in

how was the film adaption of the great gatsby in terms of cinematographic value? i know it doesn't really transmit the essence of the novel mainly because 90% of the book's charm lies in the prose, but is it worth a watch?

I've decided that I don't feel like actually trying anymore in my Speech class. So for funnsies, I want to read and present an excerpt of 50 Shades of Grey. However, I found out the speech was tomorrow, and I don't have time to read the entire thing. I'm looking for a good section that contains a mixture of plot and innuendo (ideally not too much). I need roughly 3-4 minutes of material. I've already read about 20 pages of erotica, so I can tell this will be fun

Why are there so many books about "love" and so few about "like"? "Like" is just conditional and doesn't have the "depths" of "love", but at the same time, it is so much more mundane. The more I think about it, and the more I live, the more it seems like "love" is some kind of really rare thing. Like thinking about life on some kind of "deeper" level or "caring" about life seems kind of pointless, like most people just do what they want and dont actively care about other people that much.

So what exactly is Celine's Death on the Installment Plan? Is a prequel or sequel to Journey to the End of the Night or is it just a companion piece? Google's given me varied results.

So I've been fapping to a lot of elit recently on Amazon's Kindle store. I wouldn't think my fetishes (tentacles and pregnancy) would be that popular among women, but apparently 90% of the writers I'm buying from are female and aren't just in it for the paycheck either. Can anyone explain this?

Should I began writing an idea I have for: 1. A script for a neo-noir film set in a 24 hour party colony on Mars with a melancholic bouncer of above average intelligence as the main character. 2. A horror novel about a shape shifting internet video which changes it's content to reflect the subconcious fears of the viewer, who then becomes addicted to the video and can't stop watching it, soon blurring the lines between the nightmare imagery of the video and the real world. I am thinking a lot about both of these ideas and the summaries I just gave probably sound like shit but they are way better in my head, trust me. I just can't decide on which one to get going on

Gentlemen, today is the day I submit my superultragiganigga term paper. According to MS Word 2010, I've put about 11,684 minutes into working on it. I am anxious to the point of point of spaghetti and diarrhea everywhere. My paper is on Samuel Beckett's: Waiting for Godot. (Posted about it a month or so ago) Last minute suggestions, comments, or, if you'd like, ask me anything. Submission is due 11:59 EST/8:59 Pacific.

Are there any books that talk about how in around 1500 white people took over the the world? I don't mean post-colonial literature or anything, more like the various attempts peoples like the Romans and Mongols made at taking over the world and why Western Europeans finally succeeded. Pic kinda related.

Do you have problems motivating yourself? Do you always complain "waaa I don't have time to write I'm always so tired!" If you're writing you need to have a reason to be successful, to remove yourself from squalor. Can't think how? Are you living on your parents dime? Let everything go to shit. Let your bathroom become full of mold. Let the dishes get piled above the rim of the sink. Make your living conditions become so bad you have no choice. Go into a state where the only way to extricate yourself is through success. Make yourself uncomfortable, make yourself want to achieve more. You lurk here, you've read enough and you know you can do better than the Twilights and 50 shades of Grey. Now get off your ass and go do great things.

Alright /lit/. Name me some books where a Female PROTAGONIST has a large rack. I image, as this is a physical attribute and affects how the characters around her perceive her, as well as her physicality (Running, Jumping, clothes she wears) that this would be a major asset to her character development.

I don' read enough but when I was in rehab a few months back I was given "The Name of the Wind" to reads by a friend. Well, the day I got out I went to the book store to buy "Wise Mans Fear" because I enjoyed the first book so much. How do you guys view Rothfuss' work? If you love it, what else can you recommend? I'm going back to rehab next week and would like to get some more great fantasy novels to read. Eragon was my favorite book when i was 9 and since i read NOTW I've also read the Song of ice and Fire series, which I also love and i hope this board doesn't have too much against such a fun read, although the depth doesn't really extend beyond the "song of ice and Fire" and the black and white dichotomy is pretty visible behind all of martin's greyness, i don't need a lot of emotional/ "preachy" depth in a story. So anyway, discussion of The Name of the Wind as a novel would be welcome, along with suggestions of light-ish fantasy that I would enjoy catching up on during my hours and hours of free time over the next month. Thanks a lot guys, sorry if this isn't "literature" but i couldn't find a /books/ board for shamelessly discussing books.
