You have ten seconds to explain why any kind of act, rape, murder, anything, can be quantified as good or bad, and how evil and good can truly exist in nature rather than being results of social conditioning. tl;dr, spooks.

Been a few years since I read the Hyperion/Endymion series. Recently started thinking about the books for reasons I don't even remember, when I failed to remember something from the Endymion-books. Why was Raul imprisoned in the Schrödinger cat box capsule to begin with? As far as I remember, the entire story (both Endymion and The Rise of...) was written by him while being imprisoned in space. Was it explained why he ended up there?

I was reading St. Augustine's Confessions and came to this part, where I got confused. >And yet, thou hellish torrent, into thee are cast the sons of men with rich rewards, for compassing such learning; and a great solemnity is made of it, when this is going on in the forum, within sight of laws appointing a salary beside the scholar’s payments, and thou lashest thy rocks and roarest, “Hence words are learnt; hence eloquence; most necessary to gain your ends, or maintain opinions.” As if we should have never known such words as “golden shower,” “lap,” beguile,” “temples of the heavens,” or others in that passage, unless Terence had brought a lewd youth upon the stage, setting up Jupiter as his example of seduction. Does he mean "golden shower" how I think he does? And, if so, what's he mean by the other stuff he's hinting at? Just what the fuck was this guy doing if he was a "saint"? http://www.bartleby.com/7/1/1.html For reference.

The Will's Downfall Saga

1 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: wd1newcoverFINAL EDITFOR REAL.jpg]
Hey everyone. I've been writing the graphic novel equivalent of a standard novel in the form of the Will's Downfall saga. It's a trilogy that is quite left-field from most of the current writing trend, but contains some influence from Everyone to Warren Ellis to Clive Barker and even some Stephen King for good measure. If anyone is interested, I'll include a PDF in my response and you can check out the first novel for yourselves free of charge. Besides, I don't want anyone downloading that shitty eBook version that I've got on Amazon right now.

Sup, /lit/. Anyway, indulge me: Is there any point in having a literary canon? Or any canons at all for that matter? Personally I believe it's hypocritical in the way a certain set of books are given authority in a /supposedly/ universal context. It goes against the freethought central to the study and criticism of literature in my opinion.

Hey /lit/ Can we talk Book of The New Sun? I just finished reading the first book and am about to start the second one. I usually read typical fantasy so this is my first taste of sci fi-y reading. I kind of feel that the book is over my head, like I'm missing something. English is my third language and I'm really struggling with Gene Wolf's vocabulary; there are so many fucknig weird and strange words. I don't dislike it at all, it's just the feeling that I'm missing something important. I read it because it was highly recommended here. Please share your opinions.

Just finished this. Found it really fascinating. Always interested by the idea that mental illness is a social construct. But also I enjoyed the sections about how being poor was once thought as being a result of moral failings, not economic situation. Thought it was quite relevant to today. What does /lit/ think about the book?

Hi /lit/ I'm here to share about my favorite author, his name is José Emilio Pacheco. And yes, I'm from Mexico, if you are interested in knowing how the mexican society works, that's the perfect place to begin, I've read all from Juan Rulfo, Octavio Paz, Esquivel and so. For me that kind of mexican literature is bullshit, it is the most boring thing you can ever imagine. I really hope you guys have time to read 'Batallas en el Desierto' by Pacheco If you have any mexican-literature question related I am here to answer, also, I spent 1 year studying Don Quijote, if you have any question shoot. >pic related, José Emilio Pacheco

Hello /lit/, Although I am an avid reader I have never really delved into the world of philosophy, partly out of fear that I will find out I am far less intelligent than I thought, partly because I don't know where to START (this is important to me, as philosophy seems like a process of building- one needs a foundation, and then he builds upwards. One shouldn't start focusing on the details of the roof before he has measured the planks of wood, right?). Anyway, disregarding that logic, and being the impuslive git that I am, I bought the pictured Philosophy books today on a whim. (the camus one is the myth of sys) Are these a good place to start? Have I made a massive idiot of myself? Which ones, if any, should I start with? Any advice would be much appreciated :3

Hello /lit/, Today I come to you with a question. I'm a 26 years old graphic designer and all the books I'm able to read for years are based on design, art, advertising, marketing, communication and branding. I don't read novels, classics, poems etc because I think I'd waste my time on the inner world/thoughts of somebody else. I always think I only should read rational/job-based books. Is this stupid? Am I really missing some important reads by dissing those kind of books? Would they boost my creativity? Please enlighten me. Thank you.

What is /lit/'s view on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy? Personally I do not like it, and reading it at parts is straight up painful. It could have possibly been a bad translation (it was the Penguin Classics version) but it seems so... "immodest". One moment he is humbling himself, but at the other he inducts himself into the "Circle of Classical Poets" and reminds us, the reader, that what we're reading is a great work. Not to mention the times when he uses his work to criticise contemporary figures and condemn them to hell. I don't know, maybe I let Dante's hubris blind me from a great work of art; I intend to read it through again over the summer.

Focus on themes or the rest of storytelling?

8 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: sad.jpg]
I have this idea to write a short story with a single theme. The theme being that substance has greater value than class, let me explain. I remember watching a James Bond movie and being generally unsatisfied with it simply because it was a very simple movie. It didn't challenge me at all and at best it was a tad bit entertaining. However, when I asked my friends what they thought about it, they said it was one of the best movies of all time. I asked why and, in a nutshell, they responded with, "It's just so classy. Everything Bond does is right. It's what all men want to become and what all women want." I was kind of disgusted with that view of the worth of a movie. Substance is put to the side and classiness is instead valued more. Doing what is socially virtuous instead of doing what communicates meaningful points just seems like a very pleb value system. Is this right though? Should I be focusing my story into expressing simply a theme. I know that I need to make my story entertaining also and it needs to be just that, a story; but, am I putting too much attention onto my message? Thanks.
