So, /lit/ You know that book you're been writing for just about ever? The one you'll probably never get around to finishing anyways. Let's hear the very first sentence in it. I'll start. "My high-score on Minesweeper is 35 seconds on expert. Though it doesn't seem to impress a lot of people."

Ok, so I wrote this short story and one of the central themes is hunger and vice. I am happy with (or currently rewriting) the rest of it but this opening paragraph sounds like a child wrote it. Could you guys suggest ways to state this same stuff but better? I think part of it is that I've been looking at it too long, but no matter how I tweak this I'm not happy with it. I’ve always had a love of food and drink. Eating to me is like a drug, the enjoyment of good food is a sensation difficult to equal. How does one amplify their favorite pleasure? Denial of that particular vice is the answer. Denying yourself that which you crave can only serve to make it that much more satisfying when you finally indulge. It was for this reason that I was aching for food. I had kept myself from eating for quite some time and coming back from the late night shift I yearned to break my fast. Imagine my surprise when I opened the refrigerator and instead of the meal I had lovingly cooked to devour later I was looking at nothing.

ITT: good audiobooks I generally find that I can only stand those read by the author but I'd be happy to be proven wrong. This was great, more enjoyable than the written text.

What are some habits you have formed when reading? I'll list a few of mine: -Must read Shakespeare out loud. If I can't, I imagine actors who would play them and think of their voices -Mark my starting date and ending date in the books I read -I never get collections of authors works, I prefer solo editions. -I can't fold or bend my books, it's why I have difficulty letting people borrow them IE Nitpicking: The Thread

I'm looking for an image I had once on which several famous stories are summarized concisely (if I can recall it correctly, e.g. Godfather, Scarface, Harry Potter, etc.). Furthermore, names and places (and other particularities) of the particular stories were crossed out and replcaed with names and places of other ones in order to emphasise the aspects all these stories have in common. I'd be very thankful if anyone can help out, or knows something similar to this, in case you don't know that particular image.

Need help coming up with a magic system. I'm not sure if I should get really detailed with how the magic, or if I should just be like Tolkien and GRRM and say, "magic works because it's magic."

>writers as celebrities How strong is this inclination in today's world, and how different/similar is it today compared to the writer community of the 1900s or 1800s?
