I'm in one of the better e-book private trackers. If you've been looking for a book I'll see if they have it and upload it. Include what format you want.

Thoreau also wore a neckbeard for many years, which he insisted many women found attractive. However, Louisa May Alcott mentioned to Ralph Waldo Emerson that Thoreau's facial hair "will most assuredly deflect amorous advances and preserve the man's virtue in perpetuity." >tfw history's greatest neckbeard got shot down by Louisa May Alcott

I'm on my third read through with this series and I keep picking up more every time I go through it. I think I've got most of the mysteries figured out. (Who Agia is, Who Dorcas is, Who the green man is, etc.). I'm still wracking my brain over Triskele though. Right now i'm inclined to think that Triskele is simply Severian's "totem". In other words, he's a constant symbol and serves as a stable reminder/invoker of Severian's true identity. Anyone got any insights into Triskele. Also, am I the only one who thinks this is the greatest work of the later half of the 20th century? The only other book that seems to come close is McCarthy's Blood Meridian.

Can we talk about our local purveyors of literature? At my local used book store there is a guy at the register who I swear looks and acts exactly how I picture many of you (late 20s early 30s white dude, unshaven but not beardy). When I brought a copy of "Yeats major works" to the counter he flung his arms outward and did a sort of spin while reciting some yeats poem from memory. He went on to tell me all about poetry as I am a noob and I also got The Waste Land. He said he wants to be a teacher. Now I realize this kind of enthusiasm scares most ppl but I have nothing but the utmost respect for having the courage to be "that guy" (pic related) especially since I learned from him.

Is it just me or are some Lovecraft's stories extremely awful? I just finished reading The Dreams in the Witch House and even though it has some interesting parts I'd say overall it's poorly written.

Greetings /lit/. I usually read almost solely sci fi, and a bit of philosophy, and I'm not interested in reading some of the classics of literature. I read a few but really not much. I selected a bunch I know about but never read. Are all these worth reading? What books in similar vein (well known classics worth reading) would you suggest? The most obvious ones like 1984, brave new world, catcher in the rye, catch 22, I did read.

For those of you who are at least moderately committed to writing as a hobby, how much do you write each day? How much do you write on a really good day (ie. your max), and how much on an average day? How long do you ever go without writing? In short: how prolific are you? I'm one of the slow ones. I wrote 500 words yesterday, which is a bad day even for me. 1k is probably about average, and 1.5k is a pretty good day for me. Although I don't always write, these days it's rare for me to go longer and 4-7 days without at least doing some editing, revising, or plotting, if not actual writing. Bonus question: What's the longest complete work you've ever written? Mine was 17k, a long time ago, and it was shit, but I'm two chapters away from finishing my 40k novella, so am quite pleased

Project of translating a minor Italian poet in English

Hi, I'm starting a project of translating a minor Italian poet in English ( he was never translated before). My mother tongue is not English ( i'm Italian ), and I would like some feedback, if possible.

I am an amateur philosopher and I have recently concocted a list of names for a series of philosophical essays and treatises. I'm currently working on the outlines for three of them, the rest are just nebulous clouds of ideas that have yet to lead to condensation. Since this project will likely take several years to iron out and will likely be read by very very few, I'm going to share the prospective titles and see if any /lit/izens find any of these topics interesting. Maybe we can stimulate some novel philosophical discussion.

What is the most important gift or quality that a poet can naturally have? If you could be born with a natural talent for one of the tools that integrate the craft of poetry, what would it be?

Can you recommend for me any bleak, dark fantasy novels? No zombie stuff or Lovecraft, please. Thanks much

this was bad, not just for the messy story and 2d characters but for the wasted potential of the ideas. I really hope that was Baxter fault, trying to use all the soapboxes he could find (especially Linsey) and Pratchett just filling in with random ideas.

Thoughts on the series? I've heard some people refer to it as 'plebeian'. but why? Is it because it's popular, or are the books themselves bad?

Just finished Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion. God damn, what a ride. The first book was good, and then the second one started off really rocky but about a third into it got super fucking good as well. Sol and Rachel's story is probably the best sub plot going on throughout both books too, and wanting to see the conclusion to that definitely helped push me through the duller parts. >see you later alligator >my feels Also, I feel like I missed a lot or don't remember a lot since I read it so fast, but what the fuck was this guy's deal again? He seems fucking impossible to kill, and seems like he has no motives at all. Was he just upset that nobody could hug him or something?

Hi guys, A couple of my friends and I are starting an online writing workshop. It's directed at beginner writers. The idea behind this is to help someone with no or little writing experience, but plenty of ideas, to get started on writing. Since this is a new project, we're looking for people willing to work with us before all of this is set up, so that once we have the website up and running (in about a month), we can show off their work there. So far this is non-profit, we get stories to publish on our website, the writer gets to get published and work with experienced writers and editors. In the long run we're aiming to be able to publish our writers in ebooks and get patronage from a large publishing company. This is not advertising, we just want to reach out to peple who might be interested in practicing their writing, and I know that there are plenty of aspiring writers here. Anyways, if you have questions, email me on fpww_annie@hotmail.com

Does Dennett buy into scientism? http://www.edge.org/conversation/dennett-on-weiseltier-v-pinker-in-the-new-republic >Appeal to technology: ? >Abuse of ironic inverted commas: ? >Vague hatred of postmodernism: (free space) >Assertion that scientists know more about philosophy than humanities professors: ? >Insinuation that the humanities hold an arrogant claim on truth, which they also hate: ? I'd say we have a bingo

Long sentences and avoiding conjunctions n'that. Where does it come from? Isn't awareness of the perceived rule enough to ignore it? What is lost? I don't want to hear about the beauty of language, because that only makes you seem incredibly uninteresting and nazi. Unless you make a solid case for yourself, you'll just sound like Andy Rooney, however pure your intentions might be.
