Is literature dying? Isn't cinema replacing literature? I wanted to be a writer since I was a kid. But these days I have doubts. I don't doubt my qualities, as much as it sounds conceited. I read tons of books as a child. I somehow ended up speaking five languages. I've been writing stories since I was eleven. I post some of my stories online and people say they like them. God bless those kind people. I'm working on a novel and I think it has great potential. What I doubt is the future of literature. I think it's dying. I think movies are novels of the modern world. So I'm thinking of becoming a director instead of writer. But I'm nineteen now and maybe it's too late. Thoughts?

Can /lit/ recommend any good books on mass psychology and human management? In particular, I'm interested in studies on how ancient societies controlled the populace. So the "bread and circus" of ancient Rome, the religious leadership of Mayan civilization, the travelling advisers of China, etc. etc. Stuff on modern societies is of interest too, of course.

h-hey /l-lit/, review my poem? tear it apart, i can take the criticism. i will say i did it two years ago. i still like it a lot (i was a senior in HS when i did it so that might explain things) The Pillars of Happiness Not unlike the familiar pillars Placed among the school, Stands Five other structures Comprised of a different pool. Where the former discusses character And all that that entails, The latter is a lesser known But likewise never fails. Although each pillar is important And thoroughly enjoyed, Some are more than others, Yet none should one avoid. They've no concern for status Or monetary gain. Of power, none tell, Save for the evils it can pain. Of course, if used responsibly Few things are of no use, Yet even these do not the pillars condone, For their very possible abuse. For the pillars are of Family and Friend, Of God and Romantic Love, too. Yet the fifth pillar, oft-forgotten, Is the Nature all around you.

>tfw every book you read is derivative and unoriginal >tfw fiction literature offers nothing of value other than pretty poetic sentences >tfw your zen training renders all the protagonists' problems empty, illusory, trivial and self-inflicted

Last time I was here, I was invited to stick around. I posted the link for my MEGA. I've posted two updates since then, but wasn't in last time because a lot of it, I imagine, you would have entry level/intermediate philosophy (Though I did add some Bataille, in the A.'.A.'. > Philosophy folder). Anyway: Update 6: https://mega.co.nz/#F!ARBw0ZaR!fl307jRa_ltEFOQ7ECxwLg A.'.A.'.>Libri Added a folder with various commentaries on AL named “Pestilence”. Included is “The Mystery of the Numbers” a very rare (418 copies) comment on not only AL but other Holy Books in Thelema. Equinox of the Gods (Equinox Vol 3, No3). Jerry C's Aletheia (A work on Astrology in a Thelemic context). Liber Zelotes. >A.'.A.'.>Thelema Added James Daniel Gunther's “Initiation in the Aeon of the Child”. >Aurum Solis Divine Arcana. >Chaos>Pete Carroll Apophenion and Octavo (which I swore I had). >Freemasonry Added the Swedenborgian Rite. Digital Masonic Library Index. Added a folder with the complete York Rite as of 2001. Added Marconis's Sanctuary of Memphis. >Freemasonry>Martinism Added a folder of Martinist degrees. >Neo Platonism Chaldean Oracles and Theurgy Doesn't look like much, but that's 31 new texts. Even more has been broken from TheOccult.bz, much to my pleasure. Enjoy. 93/3

I really want to broaden my literary horizons. I'm looking for novels and authors that you'd swear behind. I've read and enjoyed Selby Jr, Kafka, Irving and Cleave. Please recommend! Pic related, also enjoy McCarthy

Should books be completely free? I think governments should be ones to award writers while their books be distributed for free or the low cost of printing them.

Writing

How do I create a story that people will like? In fact, what do people like in novels (general) anyway? Also. What would you like to see happen more in literature?

Hello, /lit/! Fuck bad translations. I wish to avoid them. I want to read The Stranger by Camus. What translation should I seek? I got a copy from my library by some fellow named Matthew Ward. It strikes me as horrible. The writing is terse to the point that even if it were a desired effect it's just bland. Am I wrong? Which rendition do you recommend? Have a hilarious (and short) slightly relevant video as my thanks. http://youtu.be/85TE0K5fgJM

Thoughts on this book, /lit/? I'm not much of a reader and admittedly this is my first time visiting this board, but I saw it on your essentials and it was recommended to me by a friend. Would this be a good book to read if you're not a heavy reader?
