What do you guys think of this short story opening? >One beast and only one howls in the woods by night. >The wolf is carnivore incarnate and he’s as cunning as he is ferocious; once he’s had a taste of flesh then nothing else will do. >At night, the eyes of wolves shine like candle flames, yellowish, reddish, but that is because the pupils of their eyes fatten on darkness and catch the light from your lantern to flash it back to you – red for danger; if a wolf’s eyes reflect only moonlight, then they gleam a cold and unnatural green, a mineral, a piercing colour. If the benighted traveller spies those luminous, terrible sequins stitched suddenly on the black thickets, then he knows he must run, if fear has not struck him stock-still. >But those eyes are all you will be able to glimpse of the forest assassins as they cluster invisibly round your smell of meat as you go through the wood unwisely late. They will be like shadows, they will be like wraiths, grey members of a congregation of nightmare; hark! his long, wavering howl . . . an aria of fear made audible. >The wolfsong is the sound of the rending you will suffer, in itself a murdering. >It is winter and cold weather. In this region of mountain and forest, there is now nothing for the wolves to eat. Goats and sheep are locked up in the byre, the deer departed for the remaining pasturage on the southern slopes – wolves grow lean and famished. There is so little flesh on them that you could count the starveling ribs through their pelts, if they gave you time before they pounced. >Those slavering jaws; the lolling tongue; the rime of saliva on the grizzled chops – of all the teeming perils of the night and the forest, ghosts, hobgoblins, ogres that grill babies upon gridirons, witches that fatten their captives in cages for cannibal tables, the wolf is worst for he cannot listen to reason. >You are always in danger in the forest, where no people are. Step between the portals of the great pines where the shaggy branches tangle about you, trapping the unwary traveller in nets as if the vegetation itself were in a plot with the wolves who live there, as though the wicked trees go fishing on behalf of their friends – step between the gateposts of the forest with the greatest trepidation and infinite precautions, for if you stray from the path for one instant, the wolves will eat you. They are grey as famine, they are as unkind as plague. .

do you know of any place online where you could discuss art on a more serious, meaningful level? perhaps a place that would be too intimidating for hipster dunces to mingle in.

That new Sasha Grey book actually seems good.

I read the first couple of pages today, the prose was actually quite high quality, the kind that is sharp and grabs you. If she wrote this herself, I'm impressed (esp. since she's a retired porn star, but even generally). Maybe the rest won't be so interesting. The story appears to be a copy of Eyes Wide Shut, but that's a very good movie.

Morning e/lit/es sorry i couldn't make this thread yesterday but.... Yesterday was International Literacy Day I know its sad that you have to make this shit up when you should be reading something everyday. What did you guys read? What are you reading? Did you know about "ILD" and did you tell anyone? I was reading the Emperor of thrones Now i know those who cried out about the rape in the first chapter of Book one and gave it a 1star on Goodreads JUST for that would be even more disgusted to know that a visiting Bishop anally devastated our protagonist at age 10.....so sweet irony? or the cycle of rape/abuse? You rape me as a child and i will rape children as an adult.

What piece of Marx's work would you consider the best from a straight up literary standpoint?

Poetry translation from Italian

Hi guys, I'm Italian mother tongue, and I was thinking about starting a project of translating a minor Italian poet in English. I've tried with a small piece of one of his works. I'm not a real expert in the English language, nor a professional translator, but I wanted to give it a try. If you want to read it and give me some advice, it will be very appreciated. Bye

"He defends [his friends] when they are attacked, he gets them into magazines and out of jail. ... He writes articles about them. He introduces them to wealthy women. He gets publishers to take their books. He sits up all night with them when they claim to be dying ... he advances them hospital expenses and dissuades them from suicide." -- Hemingway

What does /lit/ think? I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I personally believe Moore's best work is long behind him.

Never been on /lit/ before so excuse a newfag. I have always loved books, and used to read a lot of poems when I was a child, mainly Spike Milligan. But I haven't really read any for years. Could you recommend any 'must read' poems, or maybe any anthologies/books containing lot's of decent poems? Pic unrelated, but Dumas is my favourite author.

What do you drink while reading? I prepare everyday a bottle of powdered lemon tea, it help me to stay concentrated (even because I work from 3:00 am / 8: 00) and I drink it exactly between the chapters. >There are few nicer things than sitting up in bed, drinking strong tea, and reading

Long sentences and avoiding conjunctions n'that. Where does it come from? Isn't awareness of the perceived rule enough to ignore it? What is lost? I don't want to hear about the beauty of language, because that only makes you seem incredibly uninteresting and nazi. Unless you make a solid case for yourself, you'll just sound like Andy Rooney, however pure your intentions might be.
