Can anyone recommend a relatively short novel that would be interesting to read over and over again. I'd like something I can really dig into, something that will keep me thinking about it all day. Any genre works. >inb4 The Stranger

Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice' to be re-written.... by the Merchant of Venice?

Howard Jacobson takes on ‘anti-Semitism’ in rewrite of Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice' >The Booker prize-winning author Howard Jacobson is to rewrite Shakespeare’s most controversial play, The Merchant of Venice, in a bid to tackle its anti-Semitism. The Jewish writer has vowed to re-explore some of the more debated aspects of the Shakespeare play. >“Mr Shakespeare probably never met a Jew, the Holocaust had not yet happened, and anti-Semitism did not have a name,” he said. http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/news/howard-jacobson-takes-on-antisemitism-in-rewrite-ofshakespeares-the-merchant-of-venice-8804011.html?origin=internalSearch I cannot express how appalling this is. Its now ok to rewrite classical literature because the villain of the story is a Jew? Not to mention the fact that the charge against him, extortionate usury, is something that was indeed historically practiced by Jews (and still is). This is insanity

Hello there, I want to make my first more or less serious drawn story, but I have a problem with a plot (yeah, ha, ha…) — I'm a math guy, so for me it's a real disaster. So here is the question: Does the some sort of master structure for plot exist, where I could answer some questions and get a base for my story? (not only a basic diagram with a exposition, climax and etc. stuff + blank fields) I've tried some generators, but.. you know, they are too weak. Genre is sci-fi, adventure, quest, if it's important. Thank you for any advice!

Raymond Carver, A.K.A. "The Poor Man's Hemingway". Just finished reading this. It was okay, but Intimacy was dumb and a lot of the relationships were kind of unbelievable. Whoever Was Using This Bed and Errand were both pretty baller though. Discuss?

I am a fanatic for metaphors and passages of verbal pyrotechnics. Therefore I love someone as Shakespeare, for example. I would like, however, to delve into the world of Greek tragedy. I've read, years ago, the Oresteia, Oedipus Rex, The Bacchae (loved that one), Hippolytus, and The Birds (yes, that is not tragedy, but is has a parabasis that is one of the most beautiful things ever written by some Greek mind). I would like to ask a favor to the readers of Greek theater: please, quote some of your favorite passages, preferably the ones filled with imagery and metaphors (I know, for example, that Aeschylus was a big fan of bold metaphors). So: quote great excerpts of Greek theater poetry. Thank you.

Hey /lit/, Clive Barker has announced that his magnum opus "The Scarlet Gospels" is completed and awaiting publication. Get ready. Who else is excited? >"I thought you might like to know that THE SCARLET GOSPELS,a large novel which sets Harry D'Amour against the Hell Priest Pinhead,is finished, and has been delivered to my agent. I don't yet have a publication date for it,but as soon as I do you'll be the first to know. I won't say anything about the narrative except this: it's a HORROR NOVEL with the graphic violence and perverse eroticism of the most intense tales from the Books Of Blood. Please feel free to share this news with any friends who might have been wondering about the book :THE SCARLET GOSPELS ARE FINISHED."

I feel nothing but pride. That's all I do feel. An empty pride, a hopeless vanity, a dreadful arrogance, a stupefyingly futile conceit. But at least it's something to hang on to.

/lit/ I need your help. My German tutor has just informed me that, due to my exemplary past record of language studies [have learnt five, fluent in three] that she will allow me to take up Russian. Not that I particularly wanted to, but it seems she is adamant on the matter. So, before I uptake this new language, I wanted to know key Russian literature that I should check out before I immerse myself in the Cyrillic alphabet. Kiitos >pic unrelated

Is Philip K Dick good? I ask because I recognize that he has had an immense amount of his works transformed into film, e.g. Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly, which have been quite good. Also, if he is worth reading, where do I start?

Hey there, /k/Ommandos. I have a question and I thought this would be the best board to answer it. I recently watched a video on Liveleak that claims to show Syrian rebels firing chemical weapons into town. What I'm wondering is... Does the weapon, weapon delivery system, dress and mannerisms of the soldiers all correspond with the claims... or does something not add up? I posted the YouTube link to the video since I'm not sure if Liveleak is a sketchy site. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YHlFjsOoY4&feature=youtube_gdata_player
