I'm going through a hard time right now. I may fail out of college, and things just seem a bit bleak. It's been a long time since I've sat down and read a book for my own pleasure, and I was wondering if someone here can recommend me one that would help impose a more optimistic view on things. I would much appreciate it.

Thanks!

Honestly, I don't think a book is gonna help. You've got to realize your situation (probably) isn't all that bad. I can pretty much guarantee my circumstances are far worse, but you know what, I'm doing better than that guy I passed sleeping in the bushes by the McDonalds the other day, or that other guy that was ostensibly dead by the dumpster I saw on my way to catch the bus to work today. Try and understand the mistakes you made to put yourself in the position you currently find yourself, and determine what you need to do so that you can better it. Talk to your family, your friends, an older person whose opinion you value. Start volunteering at your local soup kitchen or animal shelter. Start exercising. Whatever you can do to change your daily routine, meet new people, feel better about yourself. Most books will only depress you more. In my experience, they are either depressing themselves and I relate to whatever is going on or empathize with the suffering of the characters and vicariously feel their pain, or else if they are upbeat it just would make me feel worse about my own life in comparison. I wish you the best, anon. Just remember you're young and can always turn things around if you put your mind to it and make the right choices.
