Is 1984 worth reading? It is genre fiction, but it is also a classic now?

Nope

Yes

I prefer Orwell's essays and Animal Farm to 1984. Homage to Catalonia is decent as well.

Definitely, along with Brave New World

No
>it is also a classic now?
I wouldn't consider it a classic as Republic or Hamlet are classics, but definitely a modern classic and will become a classic in time - too recent to call it a classic yet.

It is worth reading if only so you can understand what people mean by Big Brother and Newspeak and other cultural references that have been spawned from this book.

To be honest, it is didactic and can feel like a chore to read. You can get a flavour for it by reading the first third of it. You can finish it if you enjoy it, but the beginning third is where Orwell lays out his dystopian vision.

This. Homage to Catalonia is really interesting. My favourite work of his is Down And Out. His collections of essays vary depending on what you are interested in. His essay on Rudyard Kipling in 'Decline Of The English Murder' has some pretty keen insights on modern left-wing politics (i.e. they are a sham).

Inside The Whale is great, as he is reviewing another great work (Tropic of Cancer).

It's good, but not as subtle or masterful as Keep the Aspidistra Flying, I thought.

It was one of the most boring works I've ever read. And I've read Atlas Shrugged.

If you want to understand the context of references to it, then yeah probably. I thought it wasn't very good, and a pain in the ass to read through.

I think its a fine read, and I think most people can enjoy it. I got fed up with Goldstein's book though and just starting skimming through it.

It's the same problem with animal farm, it is so dry is barely counts as a story.

Of course it is, prolefriend. The only people that think otherwise are edgies that want to feel important and can only fake that feeling by shitting on popular lit, regardless of how good it is.
