Just finished Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion.
God damn, what a ride. The first book was good, and then the second one started off really rocky but about a third into it got super fucking good as well. Sol and Rachel's story is probably the best sub plot going on throughout both books too, and wanting to see the conclusion to that definitely helped push me through the duller parts.
>see you later alligator
>my feels

Also, I feel like I missed a lot or don't remember a lot since I read it so fast, but what the fuck was this guy's deal again? He seems fucking impossible to kill, and seems like he has no motives at all. Was he just upset that nobody could hug him or something?

>God damn, what a ride.

Can you explain what the hype is about without any spoilers?

Well personally, a lot of the fiction I've been reading lately, especially in terms of sci-fi, have been more speculative smaller scale sci fi stories. This on the other hand is like an entire universe with several characters, planets, branching stories, various concepts such as aliens, A.I's, the nature of God and religion, colonization and mankind's effect on the environment and planets that we inhabit, there is just so much going on in these two books. Its also chock full of literary references.
And cool sci-fi action bits.
And enough twist and turns here and there to keep you intrigued.
The pacing, especially for the first one, is really good. The second....not so much, but once it gets good it stays good for a while.

because apart from one of the main characters being a weird author avatar, the books are damn near perfect.

Same. I just finished a reread of the first two, and I just have no desire to read the others. I understand they're inferior but still quality works, but... I don't really see what I'd gain from it.

They're not quality works, you missed out on nothing. Word of warning to anyone considering reading them.

i've heard they're not quality works, they're pretty bad and people recommend even big fans don't read them

It's not that Endymion and Rise of Endymion are bad but they both suffer the same fate as Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion do in the fact that Simmons conveniently decides to NOT TIE UP LOOSE ENDS OR EXPLAIN MAJOR EVENTS BROUGHT UP.

>why was the Shrike modeled after Kassad
>what was up with the Shrike Death Tree thing
>what was up with the Empathy God and the false AI God fighting each other or some shit
>what eventually happened to the fate of humanity with SPACE-BREATHING, TELEPORTING CREATURES WITH NANOMACHINES
>what was the purpose and intentions of the Lions, Tigers, and Bears

Among other things.

I finished the first two books a few months back. I really enjoyed them and feel sort of guilty for not finishing the series. Judging by these comments I am not missing much. Those lose ends are the only reason I even want to read the next books.
