Long sentences and avoiding conjunctions n'that. Where does it come from?

Isn't awareness of the perceived rule enough to ignore it?

What is lost?

I don't want to hear about the beauty of language, because that only makes you seem incredibly uninteresting and nazi. Unless you make a solid case for yourself, you'll just sound like Andy Rooney, however pure your intentions might be.

those rules are just to make writing less ambiguous and confusing. generally when writing you want people to understand what you're trying to say

It feels a bit like a double edged sword. I don't know about you, but my inner dialogue seems to be a tumble of ambiguous, boring crap where ands and buts pile on top of each other, rather than a constructed sentence bringing me to a conclusion. It feels like filtering and clarifying would rob characters of voice.

See? You used of fuckload of "," when aq "." could have been used twice or thrice. A clear mind is good for logic and reasoning. Forcing yourself to break down your thoughts into small phrases, not only will help reach that goal but will make your writing more pleasing to the reader, then, and only then, should you go for long phrases ; Proust was a master at it, but he also was a pure and utter genius. And not everyone is. It just makes you look pompous at best, at worse you'd be typing like a mess.

I wonder sometimes if this is why Taipei is so disliked by people on here. The internal rambling might have been a bit exaggerated. The use of exclamation marks felt justified to liberate the word from whatever other things it might imply.

You really want people to write solely in some horrible normal form because it's clearer? It probably is clearer but I think everything reading like prolog is the worst thing that could possibly happen to your writing.

But heres a thing you should understand. In order to attain originality in writing, one must first conform and learn to write concisely in order to structurate his thought. Then, an only then, can one hope to have his writing style improve to something that is not a total mess.

Sort of my point.

I understand this in academics, but when I see it in novels it seems to be a bit of a lie.

I don't think Anyone is opposing structure here. This discussion is about weather or not preferences in sentence structure and words, like avoiding conjunctions and stringing long sentences together, are purely aesthetic.

not really. it's just like the rules surrounding musical notation that also make it clear to the reader

He has to Structurate his thought, write some shit he doesn't want to write, then reinvent himself to something original.

He thinks he'd prefer to wing it.
He thinks conforming as some sort of investment in his future career seems counter productive as far as writing goes.

Not really? Music notation is a bare-bones way to communicate enough information that you can kind of reproduce the actual music. Text is actually the end product itself.
