What is /lit/'s opinion on rules for writing made by famous writers?

Here's two which come from the same author:
—Don't be afraid to be unoriginal. Steal if you have to.
—Over-stylization and gimmicky techniques can hurt more than they can help a work. Subtlety is a virtue lost on the middle class.

It's a repost, but I would like to get others' opinions.
Pic unrelated.

They're not laws, they're just advice. Use them as you see fit.

They're not laws, but doubtless you'll agree that an author's advice can have a serious impact on a budding writer's perception of what constitutes a work of art, whether it can stand on its own or if it depends on something outside of itself (in this case, another's opinion) to the point that it is just a shadow of the writer's insecurities.
To put it this way: I am and will probably always be a Nabokov fan-boy. There is no good way of saying it. For a long time, I was under Nabokov's sole, feeding myself on every word he had written. It took a long time to get out from under there, but I am still feeling its effects.
To what point do we need to follow what past writers have laid down and to what point do we need to break with tradition?
