>Novel Finding: Reading Literary Fiction Improves Empathy

This is a couple of years old, but it still raises an interesting question: Do you think reading fiction has made you more empathetic?

I'd say this board is proof reading does not increase empathy, but I have a suspicion most here don't actually even read.

So, maybe.

Yes. I was converted to socialism by non-political fiction.

I wouldn't say so, but I've only recently started reading (started in February and have read ~6 books since then).

I tend to read sci-fi which probably diminishes empathic benefits because of how dissimilar it can be and how the focus isn't on characters.

not really. i think certain types of books can help (chekhov). but many make you a bigger narcissist.

An addendum to my question:

Do you think reading (not exclusively literary fiction) has made you a better person?
