The third one is the best.

It's the only one where Voldemort does not appear. Sirius Black is a badass, Harry steps into the wizarding world outside Hogwarts and learns some truth about his parents.

My second favorite is the seventh, fuck y'all haters.
>but that epilogue is retarded hurr durr
It could be argued that it's nothing but a dream Harry has when he finally enters the Gryffindor dormitories.

Best to worst is the least edgy to most edgy.

Sorc/Philo > Chamber >> Prisoner >> Goblet = Order > HBP >>>>>> Hallows

Each arrow equals at least a x2 multiplier in edginess.

God's Genes 2013-09-11 19:50:37 No.4105850

I agree except I think Prisoner > Goblet > Chamber.

Anonymous 2013-09-11 20:00:57 No.4105881
I agree completely, do people say the last one's the worst?

Anonymous 2013-09-11 20:09:33 No.4105907
Goblet of Fire is the first step towards maximum edginess with the possibility of death for the participants of the Triwizard Tournament, the murder of Cedric and all the dark sacrificial shit that went on with reviving the ULTIMATE EDGY LORD OF DARKNESS (so edgy) so that'll always be above the first three for me. Chamber of Secrets of undeniably more edgy than Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone but since nobody ends up dying (they all get petrified) and since everything is fine and dandy by the end of the book I'd have to place it below Goblet of Fire. Prisoner of Azkaban is pretty edgy with all the soul sucking despair monsters, revenge executions and murderers on the loose but ultimately ultimately it remains a fun mystery romp with slightly darker themes than "hurr there's a snake on the loose".

Anonymous 2013-09-11 20:11:55 No.4105912
*was undeniably more edgy, I mean

Anonymous 2013-09-11 23:53:09 No.4106344
3rd. It's the last book in the series with an actual happy(ish) ending. After that it's all death and war and gloom. Not that the later books in the series are bad, but the third book is the last bit of innocence the 'golden trio' gets before being dragged into fighting a war.

Anonymous 2013-09-12 00:06:45 No.4106371
That's a copout argument.

It was bretty gud until the end though.

Harry should have used the Invisibility Cloak to escape death when Voldemort killed him, though, I don't care if the story is allegorical, that would have given the Deathly Hallows a reason for being in the plot and the way he actually came back made no sense

>the hallows don't have a reason for being in the plot

>1. Elder Wand - needed it to beat Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard in existence.
>2. Cloak of Invisibility - needed it to survive various dangerous situations.
>3. Resurrection Stone - needed it to accept his imminent death by meeting his dead friends and family and having them reassure him as he gave himself up to Voldemort.

All three had part to play in the downfall of Voldemort.

What the fuck are you talking about? Boo six is the one filled with awful shipping, if it didn't essentially serve as the expositional first act for Deathly Hallows it would be absurdly frivolous.

For whatever its worth, I say Book 5 and Book 7 are objectively the best reads, even though 3 is also pretty close.

(4 is very entertaining too, but the plot is ultimately surpassed the bounds of reason and consistency. Why the hell would Crouch/Voldemort put Harry through three harrowing and potentially fatal tasks when they could have easily found a much more efficient way to transport him to the graveyard?)

agreed, i want to love it but its got problems

Anonymous 2013-09-12 06:13:42 No.4107295
My personal preference:

The best: 4 - perfect combination of action, childish romance, magic and Hogwarts atmosphere.
Second: 1,2,3 all tied - in my opinion they are all equally good in their own merit.
3rd: Number 6 is still OK and actually restores some of the magic after the disaster that was number 5.
The second-worst: 7. She can't describe action for more than 3 pages straight and action/death should be kept to about 5 % of the books, seeing that she's so horrible at writing about it.
Worst: 5. Haven't read it more than once. Same applies as for number 7. Jesus Christ that book ruined the series.

Anonymous 2013-09-12 08:05:48 No.4107393
>Why the hell would Crouch/Voldemort put Harry through three harrowing and potentially fatal tasks when they could have easily found a much more efficient way to transport him to the graveyard?)

Because Hogwarts was riddled with defensive spells and the teachers already knew something fishy was going on. Also Harry wasn't vital to Voldy's plans so if he had died during the tasks that would have been an unexpected bonus.

The last was my favorite, followed by 4. I'm re-reading them and I'm currently on 4, so far I'd say 2 is the best out of 1,2,3.

1,2,3 are pure joy for my inner grade schooler

4 wass ok, it felt like awkward, much like that age, (14, 15?)

5 i liked but its too dense and even more awkward and a little overwhelming in a bad way.

6 on are p great

Anonymous 2013-09-12 09:23:11 No.4107466
4 is my personal favorite followed by 2.

I don't really understand the hate that 5 gets, it was the start of Harry becoming independent and it was interesting to see his development as a leader while balancing out all the teenager shit.

Anonymous 2013-09-12 09:32:11 No.4107469
You seem to have purposely chosen the good parts.

J.K in all three books specifically says he's depressed.
-Living with shitty guardians and a bully nephew. Has had years and years and years of shit.
-Treated like shit by them and even though hogwarts is good he still has to go back to them in all three books.
-Finds out his parents were murdered.
-Finds out the person that murdered his parents tried to murder him and still wants to murder him.
-Finds out the murderer has followers that also want to murder him
-Bullied at school by students because of his fame and bullied by Snape.
-Social anxiety, awkward as hell at times.
-Attacked by Voldemort and his followers, basallisk etc in 1 and 2
-Even though he finds out it's a lie, for most of three he thinks Serious betrayed his parents to their death and wants to kill harry. Finds out is was pettigrew, still doesn't change the fact his parents were betrayed which effects harry deeply.
-Dementors and harry being so effected by them.

Sure there are happy things but reading the first three as an adult I see more of the sad things than the happy, it's still got happiness of course but harry isn't some jovial kid that isn't thinking about all the pressures he is under.

the fuck is going on with the first book's cover?

Anonymous 2013-09-12 19:27:41 No.4108267
He gets slightly paranoid in the middle of book two, but that's because he's hearing voices in his head and he thinks he's going crazy.

But again, the first three books all have relatively happy endings and at the end of each year he's content and looking forward to returning to school.

Also: He's an abused orphan thrust into the middle of an international war at the ripe old age of 14 (end of book 4). You'd be pissed at the world too if you were in his situation.

The Hallows are extremely important for Harry's journey. Harry destroys the horcruxes - Voldemort's attempt to master death - and Harry ultimately masters the three Hallows and becomes the true master of death by coming to terms with it courageously.

Here's mine.

the movies are a lot different from the books, especially 5.
movie 5: i can beat you because friends!
book 5: a dark ending with a lot of uncertainties.

I liked 7, it was well written (at least as much as the other ones), and had some nice elements. 4 was magical to read. anyways, opinions.
