Let's discuss this, /m/.
After the MSG movies prove to be really successful in the early 80s, Sunrise decides to create a sequel to it. Tomino presents them Mobile Suit Zeta. Not Zeta Gundam, just Zeta. The story stays the same, but Kamille pilots a non-Gundam MS, let's say something similar to the ReZel or Re-GZ. Maybe the Mk. II could appear piloted by Amuro in the short time he's around. After ending, the show would get a sequel in the form of Mobile Suit ZZ, again, maintaining the same plot, just having the ZZ not be a Gundam. There wouldn't be a Gundam protagonist suit until the Nu in Char's Counterattack, where things would stay exactly the same.
What would this mean for the Gundam franchise?
Would the franchise be as popular? Could it have continued normally to the present day? Could it possibly have ended after CCA? What would this mean for Late UC, if they ever came about? And the side-story OVAs? Would you have personally preferred if things had happened this way? Any other things you can think of?
