Could someone explain to me what the point of Gerwalk mode was? Like both jet and full mecha modes make sense in and of themselves, but I don't see the advantage of going into Gerwalk mode.

And don't saying for walking cause full mecha mode does that just fine too.

For ground level hovering/flying. Speed of a jet with the thrust vectoring to keep yourself from crashing into buildings etc. Though they only used it like that in the first series.

Good for skimming across the ground at high speeds before dropping into full Battroid mode when you reach your destination.

In space, it allows you to switch to Battroid weapons (which can aim in any direction that the arm can point) instead of relying on the fighter guns which only point straight ahead. It also lets you point your engines in new directions to change velocity in ways a plane simply can't.
So in space it just gives you a lot of options for split-second combat tricks that your fighter shouldn't be able to do, which can easily catch the enemy off guard and score you the kill. Max sort of pioneered this in Space War One.

As I recall, Gerwalk was not originally intended to be its own mode, during VF testing one of their pilots got stuck between forms and they realized this was actually kind of cool.

The origin of Gerwalk is actually an accident and they decided to go with it. It really has no practical use. People will "thrust vectoring" but from a technical standpoint, that's retarded because A) thrust vectoring can be done with a less complicated mechanism more effectively and B) the legs completely screw up the aerodynamics of the vehicle and they would probably get ripped off with any sort of high-speed maneuver aka flying the thing.

Well there's another point - jets in space. And besides, you wouldn't need legs in space to thrust in different directions because you could simple do that in jet mode due to lack of gravity.

Gerwalk was made when the legs of a proto-VF toy flopped out. It resembled an earlier production design that was scrapped, but they decided to add it in as a third mode.

Well, realistically you'd turn yourself into paste if you suddenly try to reverse your thrust at combat speeds. And realistically speaking, there's a million better way to accomplish the same task that isn't "let's stick legs on a jet and fly it in space".

There's some truth to this. Gerwalk in games (A.C.E 2,3, PSP Macross games) has excellent mobility and I use to do strafing runs circling around an enemy after softening them up with a salvo of missiles from Fighter mode.

They confirm it first in SDF, Zero just lets us see the early ones. The only "confirmation" we got out of Zero was that the Destroids were being worked on back then (that scene was the fucking best)

Hovering between buildings faster than a Battroid can move, they're more agile (than both forms, mind, until about the time Plus started - the ones from SDF didn't do snap-turns at all that I remember.), and they can snap-decelerate faster. Before anyone gets me on physics, THAT'S WHAT WE SEE IN THE SHOWS, so I get on you that anime physics is inherently different.

Same with SRW - In the Alphas (the only games with Gerwalk, unless SC had it), while it doesn't have the movement speed of the Fighter, it's more mobile than both forms (who hilariously share mobility stats).

Even more interestingly, in L you get the Gerwalk for Alto's VF for the first prologue mission, and while he's a complete novice and can't use any more weaponry than the gunpod, it's also more mobile than the two other forms.
