>Being in Babby Three Friends level

The Shiranui Nigata Dai-san-dankai of based Dai Nippon Teikoku is a product spearheaded by a fudai family known for their fingers being knuckle-deep in the weapons development pie, jointly assisted by two weaboos of one of the most technologically-advanced nations on Earth (one of who would go and later create the only TSF that was feared by the Raptor), and a greyshirt who might or might not have been Showa Usui.

It is above such frivolities like the Big Three.

But that's wrong. Otherwise I agree with everything else you said. Now how come Munakata's not-Valkyries were using the Phase 2 Nigata and not the Phase 3 in 2003 and 2004?

Subtle retcon by TE? Or simply the US managed to stop Japan from mass-producing that version that uses all the YF-23's technology like active refuel system, stealth, and extra weapons pylons?

>>

Because the Phase 3 was an illegal project, I guess. Like the US is going to stand for what amounts to the figurative best product of the ATSF running around without its control. Also something something cost. As well as something something "We asked for a upgraded Shiranui, what the fuck is this triangularish shit" something something. Or probably. Or maybe not. I'll get back to you when/if the Phase 3 gets into LD8 next year.

That, and the unit in Japan's possession doesn't have the stealth and active refueling system. The first one probably went and got itself buried under fifty tons of snow and BETA meat at Evensk.

Are 1/144's that bad compared to non-scale? I get the lack of accessories and the inability of the back pylons to swing forward is annoying, but as far as I can make out, their articulation is slightly better than non-scales, and thankfully for my autism being 1/144's, they line up with other 1/144 kits.

>to preserve stealth shape and prevent radar returns off weapons
because stealth in Mub Rub, even for AMERICA, is an almost secondary characteristic to the F-22 and F-35; they're useful when facing off french-canadians, but in other timelines Baters are still the priority threat, and even stealth TSFs are primarily directed toward that end. According to TSFIA, the F-22 EMD, which is clearly the weaker melee machine compared to the YF-23, was still more than capable of taking out numerous second-gen TSFs in close quarters combat at great numerical disadvantage, where stealth was less of an issue than in normal stand-off situations.

We'll see (maybe) if in the future (haha, Mubu-Rubu advancing the Alternative timeline?) the other nations start introducing the J-20 and PAK-FA if there will be some significant changes to design philosophy.

It's also problematic in that the F-22 is classed in the same generation as the Shiranui, Typhoon, and Rafale; while the latter two have (occasionally) scored successes against the Raptor IRL, they're hardly even in the same ballpark. I get it that they needed YAMATOO DAMASHII and German Meiya needed to pilot something nice, but really?

>>
Anonymous 2013-07-15 12:57:32 No.9356937
>>9356926
They are very different machines built for very different roles. The Raptor may be maneuverable in close quarters with its thrust vectoring and powerful engines but the Typhoon and Rafale being unstable delta canard planes can out-turn it in a close, aggressive dogfight. Similarly the mecha Typhoon and Rafale have vanes and blades and all sorts of CQC shit that simply isn't available to the Raptor. It's not that far off.

While, yes, only Lockheed Martin defines the Raptor as 5th-gen, whereas Eurofighter GmbH became supremely buttfrazzled about the criteria (citing net-enabled operations as more important than full-scale low observability), in the (very) limited operation of 4.5 and 5th gen fighters, it's pretty damn clear that the F-22 (and possibly F-35, if it would ever stop eating all the budget in the world) are leaps and bounds beyond its current stable of flying friends.

I think the biggest issue is that Mub Rubu, along with some wonkiness involving earlier fighter lineages, tends to group 4th generation fighter aircraft as 2nd gen TSFs, whereas late 4.5th gen and 5th gen fighter aircraft get bumped up to 3rd gen TSFs. Obviously, in our real world, the difference between 4.5th and 5th gen is in defining the latter based on all-aspect stealth, whereas in mub-rub it's not that big an issue, but the other toys that 5th gen fighters would have (AESA, SAIRST, VHSIC, etc, etc) would (if they do exist in ML) put the Raptor far ahead of the Typhoon and Rafale.

Why does the (muv-luv) F-35 have stealth too? Why will the J-20/J-31/Pak-FA/MCA all have stealth too? Because it's their primary characteristic of their real-world counterpart. Which, as has been reiterated, puts Kouki in a tough spot, seeing as stealth is totally not useful against Baters and unless humanity clears out all the baters between, say, 2003 and 2017 (anticipated date of introduction for all these 5th gen fighters IRL) in the alternative timeline, there's basically no reason for more MUH IDEALS human infighting.

Your forgetting the Gripen. And the Raptor was in development years before the Shiranui was rolled out in 1994. IIRC, ATSF started in the late 1980's, its technically the oldest 3rd generation TSF since the Shiranui did not enter production until 1994, the Gripen in 1996, the Rafale in 1998, the prototype Takemi in 1998 as well, the Berkut being known since 1999, and the EF-2000 in 2000.

>Instead of traditional chemical rockets, mobile suits are equipped with nuclear thermal rocket engines, in which propellant is heated by the reactor and then expelled to create thrust. These devices provide substantially greater fuel efficiency than chemical rocket engines (7), allowing the mobile suit to operate for longer periods and reach higher velocities in space. The same concept can be employed to create nuclear thermal jets and nuclear thermal hydrojets, which employ air and water, respectively, as propellants.

>(7) The efficiency, or "specific impulse," of a solid-core nuclear thermal rocket is estimated at about 900 seconds, versus 300-450 seconds for a chemical rocket engine.

For the exact same reason that Gundam dropped real world power outputs, max atmospheric velocities, etc, outside of main UC: technology and science move on, and what may seem a reasonable number at one stage may be ludicrous (and defy suspension of disbelief) at another. First Gundam's very low power outputs require alternative explanations (like power to *start* e-cap reactions, etc, etc).

That said, because most of mub-rub attempts to at least be as hard sci-fi as it can regarding TSFs at least (before all this 00 unit crap), we notice some things: except for orbital drops, we never see a TSF self-propel itself to the sound barrier (in-game velocities show maximum maneuvering speed below 300kph, and max combat cruise speed at around 600-900kph)

Only difference between the Type-00R for the Regents and the Shoguns is exactly what those two guys said, a paintjob of blue vs purple. The Koubins are one of the Regent families, and any of the other Regent Houses can become the Shogun. Other then the color difference, same performance.

Type-00R vs Type-00F or Type-00A has a different visor visually, having two more human like sensor "eyes" vs the visor the F, A, and C use.

The hardest sci-fi known to man breaks nothing of course.

There's always the possibility we discover something in the future not known or explained by modern science.

Like some sort of exotic material or anti-mass system that would prevent giant robots from collapsing under their own weight.

But hard sci-fi would then be expected to apply that changed rule evenly and would likely fail to justify using mecha compared to using the same technology to make tanks and jets better then ever.

Even documentaries fudge things, you know. Almost every nuclear explosion you hear in any documentary on atomic testing, for instance, is stock audio, played in time with the explosion rather than delayed (as sound would naturally be). This is done both because very few bomb tests had their audio recorded (or recorded well) and because of the need of the program to keep the audience's attention.

Storytelling has its own rules to play by, and they generally require at least a little embellishment of "hard" reality, simply because life doesn't really play out like a story. "Hard" science fiction makes the best attempt at maintaining scientific realism under the circumstances, bending or breaking the fewest rules possible, and trying to be scientific about why those things are different.

>simply because life doesn't really play out like a story
Then again, reality is often more wonderful than fiction. Nevertheless, I can't see why hard sci-fi could be hard if it isn't completely hard to the core.
