GENRE INTRODUCTION: Actually the first genre of psychedelic music, psych folk has proven to be one of the most enduring and consistently creative genres of all time. The term “psychedelic” was coined by early psych folk band The Holy Modal Rounders, and the scene exploded after The Byrds and a couple of other bands achieved mainstream commercial success using elements of the genre. Characterized by unusual lyrics and instrumentation, as well as a fixation on the past, forest imagery, trance-esque instrumentation, and use of psychedelic drugs by artists, psych folk hit its peak in the late 1960s, with The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane displaying elements of the genre. Although the genre fell out of favor for a while from the mid-70s through the 90s, by the time the late 1990s came around the genre experienced a massive revival and was brought back into the mainstream by The Microphones and Animal Collective (if you don’t like these bands, the early stuff doesn’t sound all that much like them.)

Can anyone please tell me what the appeal about this girl is? She flops around in every music video touching herself and clutching at her hair, lacks character and style, has no distinct sound and comes across as a heavily marketed, pseudo-edgy girl who paradoxically has no particularly redeeming qualities to actually be such a figure. Why am I increasingly seeing her name in more outlets, and why is she being promoted by Pitchfork and getting any sort of moderate fame? Am I the only one who feels this way, or do most people agree that she's some weird kind of gimmick?
