why was Ride the Lightning a thrash masterpiece and everything else they did mediocre or borderline shit is the question you should be asking

I personally don't like them, but I really used to, now I respect what they've done for the metal genre as a whole. Those first four albums were really influential on a lot of what you hear on later 90's death metal albums and even early black metal like on Bathory's first album you can hear a lot of influence from what they were doing.

I don't disagree, I'm just curious as to why Metallica has enduring appeal outside of RTL.

>>37359300
Metallica's definitely influential, but that doesn't explain why they have fans in 2013 outside of a sort of academic context. As for Bathory, I'm not entirely sure I see the Metallica influence as much as I see the GBH, Motorhead and Venom.

I think NWOBHM sort of influenced Bathory and Metallica independently. But that's just my take on it.

Youthful exuberance, energy, catchy melodies, and a sense of fun. At least on the first two

I just realized this was a question. Well they have some amazing guitarists and it lies in that fertile crescent of heaviness and accessibility which makes them so likable

it is also not autistic and poppy and edgy like indie dubstep and pop glam rap

Just saw Metallica twice in 2 days a week and a half ago, And they know how to put on a good show. They played Kill en' All all the way through, and it was kick ass.

how is Metallica NOT poppy? Most of their songs conform to sort of standard verse-chorus-verse structure and most of their instrumentation falls within the pop-rock context.

I like their first four albums. They made pretty solid thrash metal and even crossed over into somewhat proggy territory on ...And Justice for All.

Everything since, though, has ranged from listenable (The Black Album), to awful (Lulu, St Anger)

fact: metallica is poppy
but verse-chorus-verse-chorus doesn't make it poppy.. it's much more complicated

Personally I love RTL, Master of Puppets and the Black album, I think their other ablums are good too.

Overal though I think it is a similar thing to the Beatles (thought obviously not in the same league) - they never did anything fantastically or ground breaking but they we at least consistently good over an extended period. Large media coverage, a death and a history of Commerial success have covered up much of what was just good.

>groundbreaking
Who the fuck is groundbreaking? Zappa just made weird music because he's mentally deranged, and Beefheart made weird music just to piss people off. That isn't groundbreaking, it's eccentric. You can trace back any artists influences, so nothing is truly groundbreaking.

historically significant if you like thrash/death/black etc. metal
"ride the lightning" is nostalgic for me since it's the first metal album i heard, but generally speaking german thrash ala sodom/kreator/destruction is much better
