Okay, so a good friend of mine plans to cycle to from Melbourne to Sydney in December or January of 2014/2015, and he has asked me whether I would like to come with him.
He is very fit, has a proper road bike, and is just generally very prepared. I on the other-hand am a complete novice cyclist. I ride around the city, to and from friends houses, and that sort of stuff, so I'm not in any sort of horrible shape. I am however, unaccustomed to long rides. I've knocked off the occasional 30-40km ride, but that's about it.
So what I was wondering is, how hard would it be to get into the sort of shape where I am able to join him on this, for want of a better word, conquest? What sort of regime should I adopt to get fit enough for this?
Also, if you have any tips for long-distance riding, how to remain comfortable, and what sort of gear I should think about getting (including bike), please do tell me. Also, how much money would a trip like this cost would you guess? And will any old bike be able to make the trip? I currently have an old mountain bike, it's in good shape, I think it was like five hundred dollars or so when my father bought it, but that was ten years ago. I've had it serviced over the years, I clean it regularly, and change the tires, so it is in decent shape.
I am a 19 year old male, 5'10/178cm, 62kg/137lbs, and currently in university, so I have some long holidays coming up, November-March.
