been cycling and going on bikeforums for years, and didn't hear the term fred once. Then when I started coming here, I see you guys throw it around every chance you get. Anyone wearing a kit is apparently a "fred" according to you guys. Why is that?

Thinking of packing in my dull office job and working as a bike builder/mechanic at a local bike shop chain (in UK). I know there are a few anons here who work at a bike shop so any advice, pros/cons would be great! Just to please mods, what tyres you guys running now it's winter?

The folks are wondering if there's anything I'd like for christmas, and I'm thinking of asking for a general bike tool set. Is pic related alright? Is there a better one in roughly the same price range? Amazon links would be preferred thanks <3

Hey guys. I'm looking to buy a new bike. I'm thinking mountain bike because they look durable and because I'm 205 pounds. How much should I expect to pay for a solid mountain bike and what brands should I look at? Currently I'm looking for black friday deals at REI and Amazon. The only bicycle brand I'm familiar with is Huffy because they were a childhood favorite.

Hello /n/. Non-amerifat here. I'm a fatass turk and my doctor basically said that if i don't start cycling i'll end up with diabetes like my father. (running may cause injury at my weight) Which of these bikes would you recommend? Keep in mind i don't want anything too expensive. I'm 5'11, 100 kg http://www.bisikletcim.com/dag-bisikleti - mountain bikes

I there a recommended /n/ bike lock? I recently purchased my first "real" bike and would like to commute to my university with it, but I don't have a lock yet and I'm not sure what to go for. Thinking of either a kryptonite fahgettaboudit, kryptonite series 2 or a abus granit x plus folding. The first one seems like the safest but it's also the heaviest, and it's expensive and quite short (unsure I can fit rear wheel, frame and fixed point with it). The second one is the cheapest but I've seen some mixed reviews from people (bike stolen easily?) despite having great ratings everywhere else. It also comes with a cable, so that's nice. And then the third one, about the same price as the kryptonite fahgettaboudit. Seems more practical as it's a bit lighter, easier to get around frame/wheel/point and can be folded and mounted on the frame quite nicely. Not sure if it holds up as well though. So, any recommendations or advices? I plan on getting a cable for the front wheel too for all three.

Can we have a thread dedicated to planes so ugly, that they're beautiful?

Thermal underwear thread

Hello gents, Can somebody give me a rundown of the differences between materials used for thermal underwear? I know cotton is shit, but that leaves merino wool, technical fibers, a mix of the two, or whatever else there may be. I need something that can be used for everyday use under my jeans as well as for cycling in -5'C maybe -10'C temperatures for short rides (<30min). From what I read, technical fibers are supposedly better for sports, but there's a ton of different models with various blends of materials and I'm not sure what to pick. Please don't recommend any brands; I live in Poland and I have a lot of polish companies to choose from that are much cheaper for the same quality than internationally known brands. Thanks

ITT: We make a high speed rail corridor You think under the right conditions a Line from Center City of Tuscon to the Center of San Diego would attract passengers and economies to shift? Imagine being able to go to AZ or CA on a whim without the annoyances of air travel. Infrastructure: Making adjacent stations and trackage where appropriate without delving too far into farmland or desert/ wildlife preserves. Parallel highways and stick close to other already developed infrastructure. High speed flyovers for non stop trains to certain destinations. Track speed limit: Between 170 to 220 mph Dedicated track. Zero Intervention from Freight Lines. Rolling stock would be gauged on how much funding there is. But rest assured the trains are planned to go above 150 mph depending on FRA dickings. Possible? Not Possible? Shitty Investment? Awesome Investment? Go.

How was your ride today: aka Ride General

Fresh snow today. I love riding at night in the snow. Riding through parks it was easier to spot the MUP with my headlight turned off, if the snow had been any deeper it would have been difficult to see at all. I came across dozens of rabbits during my ride and the first coyote of the season (they walk along the ice into town and eat the rabbits). I got a Smartwool NTS Micro 150 Beanie today and it was perfect under my balaclava. Very light weight and improved moisture transfer so my balaclava didn't feel quite as soggy against my forehead by the end of the ride. I ordered two of them for summer use as a non-stink helmet liner, but I'll probably use it all winter too.

My new Brooks is reaching maximum comfy. Just took it for a two hour ride without padded cycling shorts. It seem I have transcended saddle soreness.
