Bicycle history

Why did it take so long for us to invent the bicycle? Apparently this was the first ever bicycle, the Celerifere. Disregarding how retarded this thing is, why did it take until 1790 to even come up with the idea? We've had cranks, chains, and cogs since the Romans. Why did it/do you think it took us so long?

Alright you lot, fagg/o/t here. I've got a honda cbr and realised that my fat arse needs some workout. I have a noname shitbike I've bought for 60$ a while ago and I absolutely hate it. You see, I've learned to abuse my bike because my last one was a mountain bike with which I've never had a problem with, but grew out of. My current bicycle has a seat that I keep slipping off of under braking, wheels so weak they get misaligned if you look at them too hard and a planetary gearbox that almost killed me once under heavy acceleration, when it slipped and I landed anus first on the frame at like 30 km/h, luckily I didn't crash. Anyway, I want a mountain bike. Not a new one, fuck that shit, but I want something that will survive me being a retard, and is fun to ride. What should I Iook for? I know how to buy a motorcycle so I'm guessing check the alignment, chain, tires, derailleur, but is there anything else I need to know tl;dr I'm a fagg/o/t and in need of a mountain bike to commute and muck around. How much should I pay and what should I Iook for

Considering a Critical Cycles bike - Bike Buy General

For a while I've been considering the bike in pic related, and was wondering if anyone could find a listing for it in the Tampa Bay Area in FL. Info to know: >Inseam: About 97.5cm >$200 max >BMX Handlebars (like pic related), single-speed I don't need to have a listing of the bike I'm looking for on Craigslist, just somewhere in the area would be fine. And if you're looking at a bike, include the following >Local CL link >Inseam/Measurements >Desired price range >Type of bike you're looking for Bike Buy General.

Why recumbent?

13 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
Cycling has many benefits for everyone, including our planet, the list is almost endless. No doubt if you are with us reading this site you don’t need reminding of that, but why specifically a recumbent? The top reason for riding a recumbent as suggested over and over to us by our users is comfort. There are many health issues with standard bikes, from taking the most sensitive parts of your body, wedging it on a hard seat while vigorously pumping your legs up and down, to wrist, back and neck issues. If you were going to sit down for 2 hours to read a good book, think to yourself, are you going to choose a wooden stool with no back support, or are you going to sit in your favorite comfortable reading chair and put your feet up? Riding a bike is just the same, if you are going to enjoy yourself, why not do it in comfort and style on a recumbent. If you are riding for exercise, recumbents still give you all the same health benefits as cycling an up-right bike does. Working on tone and cardio, a recumbent also being laid back opens up your chest more for better breathing. So if you bike for exercise, don’t worry you are still getting a great work out, just without the same pressure sores. The recumbent position does use slightly different muscles however, so if you have been for a test ride and weren’t quite sure, remember it’ll take a month or two to get your ‘recumbent legs’ going. A recumbent also works your Glutes (butt) and Abs (tummy) a little more than an up-right bike so they are great for the figure.

Why a velomobile?

12 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
A velomobile, or bicycle car, is a human-powered vehicle (HPV) enclosed for aerodynamic advantage and protection from weather and collisions. Nearly all velomobiles are single-passenger vehicles. They are derived from recumbent bicycles and tricycles, with the addition of a full fairing (aerodynamic shell). Most Velomobiles have three or four wheels. Fully faired two wheel roadgoing machines are included within the more general category "human powered vehicle" (HPV). Pedal powered faired vehicles intended primarily for racing are usually called streamliners. Streamliners have set many speed and distance records.

THE 2ND BIGGEST UPRIGHT BUTTHURT LOSS TO A RECUMBENT

The competition, which after five hours and 52 minutes was abandoned to a storm, was won by Bram Moens. Second was Ymte Sijbrandij, the rider of Flevobike. After five hours and 52 minutes Bram Moens had travelled 317 kilometers and Sijbrandij 312 kilometers. If the match was not eight minutes ceased for time, Moens and Sijbrandij would have beat the world record. Which is now in the name of a Russian (Serguei Dashevski, 320 kilometers in six hours cycling). All world cycling records are made by the recumbent bicycle, but these are not taken seriously by UCI. The Tour De France is a farce. The organization of the Tour is so afraid of new technology. It will be some time before the first recumbent can participate in the Tour de France and will pass the finish line in Paris half a day sooner then the platoon. In Norway, organizers of a major race were so irritated by the performance of the two Dutch recumbent riders that they changed the rules during the game. Sijbrandij and Moens did the Trondheim - Oslo race last year, which is about 540 kilometers. Moens was first to arrive at the finish line, and Sijbrandij second, but the prize money went to the third cyclist, on an upright bicycle bike. Now recumbents may not participate anymore in the Trondheim - Oslo race. In the blade of the cyclingbond, Sijbrandij said: 'It is, of course, a little strange that during a match the rules be changed and the recumbent bicycle out of sudden'. ----- Translated from: http://www.volkskrant.nl/dossier-archief/wie-te-hard-gaat-mag-niet-meer-meedoen~a475345/ this happend in 1998. Now do you see where our hate comes from?

Daily reminder that front wheel drive is actually faster then rear wheel drive because most of the weight rests on the rear wheel making it harder to propel the rear wheel forward then the front wheel.

What do you think of Surly bicycles? Have you ever ridden them? Do they ride nice? Are they high quality? The company seems to have a pretty cool philosophy, and I am also Minnesotan (Surly is based in Minnesota) which makes them appealing to me for personal reasons. I have never ridden one but I kind of want one. Should I get one?
