The list of weaknesses in Melbourne's rail network is so long that fixing it all would be unaffordable, according to an internal audit obtained by The Age, but Metro has warned the state government some of the problems are so critical they can no longer be ignored.
The internal audit has revealed the system is in such poor shape after decades of neglect that it cannot cope with expected demand unless hundreds of millions of dollars of failing infrastructure is renewed.
More than $950 million has been spent on the maintenance and renewal of the metropolitan rail network in the past four financial years, government figures show. Yet Metro's highly detailed five-year plan, reveals the repair job remains huge and damages the reliability of virtually every aspect of the network.
Metro has appealed for state government funding to rectify the many problems.
"If funding is insufficient to support the capacity enabling projects and service delivery in a timely manner, this will prevent MTM [Metro] providing sufficient services to meet patronage growth," the document states.

What are you doing to do to reduce the amount of cars on the street and increase the amount of bicycles and public transportation?
What are you doing to decrease public transport costs and increase funding for cycling infrastructure?
Few facts about myself:
age - 34
country - The Netherlands
primary transportation - velomobile, public transport, grannie bike
If I want to go somewhere to far to cycle, further away, I will use the bus or train.
I do not own a car.
4 days a week I commute to work 12 km to and 12 km back in my velomobile.
I vote GreenLeft since that most prominent party actively discouraging car use and promoting cycling infrastructure, but also other better aspects such as less dependency on foreign fossil energy, support for more animal welfare and biological farming.
Next to that I am writing a book about human powered transport so I can get the word out, especially about velomobiles since they are less known but have great possibilities.
I've also just started participating in local politics so that hopefully I can get a seat in the municipality house for the GreenLeft party one day.
It is not that I hate cars, but we overuse them way to much for simple activities, such as a trip to the grocery store, commutes under 15 kilometer to work or school, or a doctor appointment, you name it.
I think the Netherlands has great possibility. We are a small, safe country by standards and we have a good start ahead of many other countries when it comes to environmentalism and cycling.
