First road bike: Tiagra+Disc vs 105+Rims

22 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
Hi, I'm about to purchase my first road bike and I was wondering if it would be a wise decision to go for a disc brake equipped bike? I'm coming from a MTB background where disc brakes are standard so no prejudice there. I'm a fairly light guy at around 143 lbs. I've been looking at the Giant Contend SL range and narrowed it down to 2 models: SL 1: https://www.giant-bicycles.com/pl/contend-sl-1 + Nearly full 105 groupset + Lighter wheels + Colour (personal preference) - Rim brakes (that wear out the rim, I'll have to eventually replace the whole rims/wheels) SL 2 Disc: https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/contend.sl.disc.2/26004/92756/ + TRP Spyre mechanical discs (probably the best mechanical disc brake at the moment. Engages both brake pads.) - 10 SPD Tiagra (shall I decide to upgrade to 11 SPD it would be expensive) - Heavier wheels I live in a fairly hilly area with steep ups and down (albeit not long).

>mountain bikers who can't bunny hop how is this a thing? Seriously I see people all the time who have been riding for years and can't bunny hop for shit. Why? why why why? it's not that hard.

Why do cyclists disobey traffic controls all the time? You say "share the road", claim that the bicycle is equivalent to a car or motor cycle on the road, and bitch about actual respectable people who can afford to drive a car because they work hard and don't ride a bike everywhere like a loser. A red light means stop. Green light means go. Stop signs mean stop. No turn on red means no turn on red. No left turns or no right turns mean no left turns and no right turns, respectively. Want to treated the same? Act the same, abide by the rules. If you don't then don't complain when cars run you over when you're riding on the road disobeying every single rule of the road. It's your fault.

Build your own bike

Is building your own bike easy? I want to build one similar to this but I have no idea where to start. Anyone got some resources/guides to read up on?

Why does everyone hate the C-162. I got my PPL on it, and im just a ppl fag, and an IFR studentfag, but in my opinion nothing beats how happy this aircraft is to fly. Its way harder to fly than other trainers, and its a bit more expensive than other LSAs (RV-12) but it flys like a peach. Show me a better aircraft for learning to fly in? (I seed you that it has no useful load, but everything else is good.)

Singapore beat us to self driving cabs

You have to admit here in the USA we've been so busy trying to stop and shit on this technology for some time now. Singapore though just went along with it even got government money to start it up. Why is it that in the USA and where I'm from California is now the laughing stock of the world when it comes to building the next revolutions. I don't understand this frightening fear Americans have over driving jobs being lost either. Most jobs have been lost to time. There used to be a guy at an auto factory that would literally install door handles then his job was taken by machines. The world is changing and if we don't do something about this then the Chinese and Indians will. http://www.asianscientist.com/2016/08/tech/nutonomy-sg-trial-driverless-car/

>be me >riding in the city >on a paved bike trail >there's some path going down towards the river >decide to explore >some singletrack jutting off from it >go on the singletrack >some guy has a tent set up >ride past him >go a very little ways further >see a clothes line with a bunch of clothes >get far enough to see around corner >some old guy has a camp set up >he has like 6 bikes there, maybe more I didn't see, wouldn't surprise me if he had 10 >thought he saw me, but I didn't want to bother him, I turned around >then a few seconds later (acting like he hadn't seen me before) he said "who's there!?" >I said "I'm just wandering around exploring, I didn't realize you had a camp set up here, sorry" >he said "That's alright bro!", sounded like a nice friendly guy But why the fuck did he have a fuckload of bikes at his camp? Is he a bike thief? Should I steal them back then look up their serial numbers and find their original owners and give them back? Or did this hobo actually buy like 10 bikes for himself?

Can i swap in a bigger chain ring?

3 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
About 10 years ago i swapped most of the parts of my bike for various shit. (most of the hardware is now Deore) Then i stopped riding a bike. Now i want to get back into commuting with my bike but i realized that it is too slow. I think my front chainrings are too small. Is is possible to swap the largest one for a larger chain ring?
