Dawes Lightning Cross
Aluminum frame with steel fork, I'm getting this thing for 375 off craigslist. Road tires, clip-less pedals, LBS testimony that the sora shifters are okay (OR BULLSHIT MARKETING)
With a tightass virgin budget, it's really all I could afford. Retail is 470, because bikesdirect LIES, RETAIL 1000? HA, CHINESE FACTORY A SHIT
Did some google research, and there are some pretty happy owners. But everyone also sometimes point out the aforementioned, how it's some off-brand and not actually the real Dawes UK but some brand name stealing Dawes USA, and some cases of reported "shitty bike do not buy." But I feel like the same could be said for any bike? Bad reviews and good reviews, and what not.
Overall you can see I'm pretty skeptical, /n/. I don't THINK I mind too much, I'm driving down from Austin to San Antonio to see if it's worth the buy - I'll be test driving it around a Wal-Mart. This will be my entry level road bike, and I won't be buying another one for a while.
I already have a Hybrid 7.1 Trek 2013, was looking to get this guy so I can join UT Cycling. Don't know if I could keep up with my hybrid, so I'm getting a road.
What do you guys think?
tl;dr cyclocross off-brand road bike. Normally 470, buying for 375. Don't know if I could get anything better for 400 or lower locally. (within 100 miles)

Hey /n/, I'm looking to ride my bike to school (senior year, about 7 miles one way) and I have some concerns. I really like the idea of getting so many easy miles in while also saving on fuel every day, but I question the safety of my bike.
I don't really feel comfortable leaving my bike locked up for 8 hours in an area populated entirely by thousands of 14-18 year olds, is there any way to circumvent this? Lots of jerks who would slash bike tires or scratch frames.
Also, is there any better way to transport materials than a messenger bag?
