How do you improve your stamina? I've been casually cycling for a couple of years, and would like to join some local races. Only thing keeping me from it is my weak stamina. I quit smoking and increased my daily rides, but only improved a little. I can sprint, but I would really like to hold optimum speed for much longer

> Be on designated bicycle path > Come to major intersection, have to get to island. > Big 4wd coming down slip lane, wait for him to pass. > 4wd stops 6 feet short of ped/bike crossing, 7-10m short of give way line. > See that traffic is against 4wd anyway. Often have to go in between cars waiting in this sliplane in peak hour to cross. > Start to cross in front of 4wd because would have to go up road to get around behind. Keeping my eye on him. > Realise that I can't see his face, he is looking down other road to the right. > 4wd lurches forward without looking ahead. > Got my eye on him and know he's not looking, leap off platform pedals like a cat. > Bike goes under 4wd. Bruise on elbow from bonnet and tear in show from getting caught in his lisence plate when jumping off. > Cranks destroyed and front rings bent (later realise frame is bent writeoff). > Dude drives me home. > Take bike to LBS. mfw they point out bent frame. > All week chosing new bike. > Consider pedal selection, thinking about clipless. > MFW I realise that if I had clipless before, I might be dead.

I just got a bike with shimano rsx and the rear brake lever has a bunch of dead travel where it isn't pulling any cable. what's going on?

Hi /n/ I finally bought a second-hand road bike after lurking here for weeks. Just unboxed it, I'm going to try to assemble it over the next few days in between work etc. The situation currently is that I have no tools and really no clue what I'm doing. I'm gonna have a hunt around for guides on the 'net, so inb4 lmgtfy... But if anyone here has any tips, I'd be grateful. I'll try to take some pics along the way but I only have a shitty phone camera.

/n/ how do you lock your transportation devices, mainly bicycles? I wanted to buy this Kryptonite mini u-lock + cable combo because of weight, but seeing real world images , I think it's too small to lock muh frame, back wheel and object that bike is secured to. On the other hand, I live in low crime area and was thinking i could just lock my frame with u-lock and my wheels with cable. Am I just being too naive? Full size u-lock is fuckhueg and fuckheavy. Post your experience, opinions and pictures.

Since Cyclocross bikes seem to be known for being espensive as fuck, and tend to be a reputable type of bike in general (mountain bikes tend to be the go-to sucker variant for any bike-pleb that doesn't know wtf they're buying/doing), yet wal-mart tends to be the plague of any bike-buff, what does thee think of this? http://www.walmart.com/ip/21191103?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227000000000&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=&wl3=21486607510&wl4=&wl5=pla&veh=sem

I was recently on a C-5 Galaxy from the USAF. I noticed that the seats in the passenger section are rear-facing. This was probably done for convenience, but it brought up a question. Would rear-facing seats on aircraft be safer, as in a crash you would be pushed into your seat rather than forwards head-first into the back of the seat in front of you?

Mongoose Beast $200 Fat Bike

I saw this on a forum and checked it out. It's only 200$ and people are reporting it's a very sturdy bike. The are ditching the tubes for lighter ones and drilling holes in the rims to lighten it. Also they say it needs to be re geared, I guess the gearing is to tall. But for 200$ it looks like fun.

How much would /n/ pay for this Trek 2300? It's running mostly Shimano 600, except shifters, which are Sora.

Stem shifters were never good, downtube shifters are obsolete, bar-end shifters are out of style, and brifters force you to move your hands to the levers/buttons. So what's the next step for shifting technology? Butt shifters! http://vimeo.com/62973751

Have there been any studies on the long term effects of inhaling exhaust from bicycle commuting? Once in a while I get a lungful of diesel and it feels like it's going to be the death of me.

SPD to Crank Brothers

Hello lovely /n/ people. Today I bought a pair of used Crank Brothers Egg Beater pedals. I usually ride with SPDs and I was curious what other people’s experience with these pedals/ switching from SPDs. I ride fixed clipped in, and I’ve heard that the Egg Beaters are more secure, any word on that?
