Why do cyclists neglect their gears? I use them like crazy but I notice that others hardly bother with them and just pedal harder. >Acceleration smoothing Start on the lowest possible gear, start pedaling, time it so that as soon as you feel your legs about to spin out you jump to the next gear. Gives amazingly smooth sweat-free acceleration if done correctly >Gear change smoothing say your bike has 3 gears at the front and 8 at the back. As we all know you multiply them together to find out what gear you're on. if your're on (front gear) 2 and (rear gear) 8, to go any faster you need to switch to (front gear) 3. unfortunately that instantly takes you from gear 2x8=16 to gear 3x8=24. That's a big jump, you skipped 8 gears. What if you went up to (rear gear) 7 and then switched to (front gear) 3 but in the instant before you flicked the rear gear down to 5? The net result is that you jumped from gear 14 to gear 15 which is a pretty smooth transition. If doing it exactly is too complicated for you, in general quickly flicking your rear gear down just before putting the front gear up will cause you to skip less gears and thus make the transition smoother. >Momentum induction This is my favorite and it's also the simplest. so you're cycling through your gears to speed up but you can't quite spin out the gear you're currently on. Flick the gear down, this will cause your legs to momentarily spin out and gain velocity which in turn gives them more momentum. Flick the gear back up to where it was and use this extra bit of momentum to spin out that gear and move onto the next one. I gave it the fancy title of momentum induction because you've induced extra momentum in your legs by temporarily increasing their velocity (momentum = mass x velocity)

After nearly 20 years, this randomly popped into my head today. When my family used to go on holiday to Great Yarmouth (UK) as a kid, these little buses would drive us around the town. Funny how the brain can randomly pull something small and insignificant from your past.

Alright turds, I'm cannibalizing my hardtail 29er to build a FS 26. I've never into wheel building, but I figure i'd give it a shot this time around. Is UST really all it's cracked up to be? As far as being able to fix a flat on-trail, is it practical? Also, poor collegefag, so am I going to burn up serious $ trying to make this system work?

Anyone else really passionate about cycling but lacks the fund for it? I'm interested in getting into DJ/Street, doing more trails, and I want to build myself a nice commuter. Problem is, I barely can pay the rent, so I'm left riding my mediocre Haro Flightline 2. Got a second job to be able to fund my next bike. How do you guys deal with this situation?

Please give me some advice /n/ Ive been riding mountain bikes since i was a kid I never change gears, i always use the gear that takes the most effort to pedal, and makes you go fastest. All my bikes have been stolen before or given away to someone when i was younger.. all had gears but i only ever use the hardest one. So for my next bike would having a fixed gear (i plan to build something like pic related) be okay ? I always hear people talk shit about "fixed gear" ... are there any problems with it or is it just the hipsters that ride those vintage thin wheeled bikes that are the problem? Im referring to a mountain bike >tl:dr Is having no gears or a bike like pic related a bad thing ?

Also, I've got a polar HR strap, will strava record a HR profile (i may need to get a bluetooth compatible strap as well?) or what can i do for that?

Good day ge/n/ts Preemptive TL;DR: What is the maximum weight an average roadbike (pic related) can support? I'm a pretty tall and heavy guy (193 cm(6'4'') / 105-110 kg (~240 lbs), a mix between muscles and fat, i don't know if there's a word for that in english), got into cycling again a couple months ago after taking a break for about 1.5 years. I've been training pretty hard to get back to the level I was before. The bike I'm riding right now is a "city bike" from what I know which has served me well for many years but lately seems to get more and more problems to the point where repairing it wouldn't be worth it anymore. So now that I've decided that I'm going to buy a new bike I thought about getting something like in this picture. But when I started thinking about it I recalled that I've never seen anyone with a body similar to mine ride one of those. They all seemed shorted and more importantly skinnier than me. After some research I found that some bikes have weightlimits like 85 kg(180lbs), other sources claimed certain roadbikes have a maximum limit of 109 kg even though you have to maintain the bike more often than usual if you're over 82 kg. Does anyone here have any experiance or a clear answer for me?

I saw a Jamis Aurora Elite when I was at my LBS today and I kind of want one. What are some other good bikes that aren't Specialized, Trek, and Cannondale?

Well, personal question to /n/. Would you guys buy an Infiniti Q50 sedan? Waiting for the dealership near my house to get them and buy a black one.. Or would you guys get a G37x coupe? The problem I currently have with choosing is that I never drive with more than one person in my car, so a sedan is really useless and the G37x looks way better too.
