/n/ what do you think is/should be someone's average biking speed on different terrains/elevations?

For example, if someone is biking on a flat road, how fast should they be going? Uphill? Downhill?

When I go down my hill on my commute I hit 35-40 MPH, but on the way back UP it I only go between 7-8 MPH.

I ride on this flat section and was going like 16-18 MPH on a road bike, and this older Asian guy on this mountain bike who I passed downhill went past me like I was standing still and I felt like shit getting passed like that and like I suck at riding

Are you sure the bike wasn't motorised in some way?

You're looking for an arbitrary standard that doesn't exist because there are too many variables.

Really, though, you sound like your real issue is that your pride is hurt because someone else is (apparently) going faster than you are. If so then that's a rather immature attitude to have and you'd do well to just get over it.

tfw you buy an electric-assist bike just to do 50km/h overtakes on anyone who passes you to make them feel bad

I dont commute but for me doing anywhere from 20 to 75 mile rides I can average around 18-20+ mph on flats is pretty typical. 9-12 mph uphill 3-5% grades assuming I dont burn up my legs in the 1st few miles of that.. I try for a high cadence instead of grinding and downhill I have hit 50 mph but it really just depends on the hill and how much energy I want/can to expend instead of resting up.

Its going to be different for everyone and based on what they are riding and what kind of effort they want to put out. Dont worry about us cat6 pros passing you it means nothing to me.
