2001 ford focus acceleration/chugging

i recently purchased a used 2001 ford focus sedan, less than 100k (around 93,000). when i first purchased it, there was definite chugging when i got to around 60 mph in 5th gear, and i figured it just needed a simple tune up and oil change. so i got that all done and everything worked fine for a while. i was taking it on a road trip down the east coast (usa) and on the way back in baltimore, the chugging thing happened again, and my cars acceleration disappeared, no matter what gear i was in, i could floor the pedal, and all the car did was slow down. so this was kinda frightening, especially on 95. when i pulled over, it seemed to stall out, all the lights came on (oil, check engine, battery, etc). so i let it rest for a bit, turned the car back on and it was fine.
since then, this has happened multiple times...pull over, stall out, turn on..fine. a few times it seemed like the car wouldn't turn on (there would be a clicking noise), but after waiting a few moments, it would turn on fine, like nothing happened.
whats the deal? is it something like a dirty fuel intake, bad wires, misconnections? i'm not much of a car guy, so any help would work. i'm taking it to a mechanic soon, but figured i'd check out what the deal was here.
