Hey /o/ I'm fixing up a 77 ranchero with a 351w and am wondering if this port needs to be covered. On rear passenger side. PO regularly drove the car like this.

Here is another image with plastic piece removed (comes off easily).

My 75 Ford has one, I believe it's some sort of early crankcase ventilation system (don't quote me on that.) There should be a hose on that that leads to the carb or into the air filter, but if you really don't care then just let it be. There's a chance that some crap might get in there though, so I would put it in it's original spot.

On my truck the passenger side one leads to the carb while the driver side one leads to the air filter.

Yeah that's called a pcv valve and yeah it was a type of crankcase ventilation

Also I don't think it matters if it's covered but it's better if it is, some have a hose running off and on to the air filter

yeah its a pcv valve. you want that little plastic peice on there, thats the valve, you can put some hose on the end of it if you want so its not spraying oil all over the rest of the engine, but its supposed to be open like that.

You definitely WANT your PCV to operate. Without some way of venting those crankcase fumes, the pressure can build up so much that oil will seep out of every gasket on the engine.

It may spray mists of oil around the engine bay. Put it to a catch can.

it's fucking there for a reason!
a breather is not enough, you need positive crankcase ventilation.

deleted the on on my old 350, thing started to smoke due to excessive crankcase pressure.
