I need some help /o/, ive been working my next car purchase down for a good few months now and ive come down to two options at a relitave tie.
>1&2nd gen Ford explorer

>Post '96 subaru wagon
(preferably an outback sport or outback, but a legacy would work too)

Ferd is worse on gas, but has more ride hieth, is frame on body, and rwd/4wd instead of awd
They both have cargo space in spades, which I need
Both can tackle weather and trail riding
Both are somewhat comfortable for thier class.

Ive driven both and like both, though they do drive much diffrently.
Does /o/ have any opinions on these rigs? Im having a hard time deciding between the two.

Das bampu
I will say the explorer seats not having headrests bothered me a little, as im tall.
But my computer chair dosent either, and im okay here, so I think its a matter of getting used to it.

I live down a 3 mile dort road that goes up and down multiple rocky hills
So clearance and offroad chops of some sort are needed

Dirt* shit.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 19:03:25 No.13341973
Does the explorer rollover as easy as people say it does?
Also im figuring maintenance on the explorer will probabaly be easier due to no boxer engine?

Whats the explorers aftermarket like?
I know subarus is strong, but I wonder about the ford.

First generation Subaru Forester and piece together a full STI body kit for it over time.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 19:47:06 No.13342211
From what yesrs do you grab the sti stuff from?
And how much will bolt on?
Thanks for response

Anonymous 2015-08-30 19:47:45 No.13342213
is it really a car from the roadkill show or is it just a sticker?

Anonymous 2015-08-30 19:50:28 No.13342223
Pretty sure thats just a sticker
Its a really cool idea though, they have abs and everything
Its just the older body on a vic frame.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 19:52:52 No.13342234
Explorers love to eat transmission after 200K miles, but get the V8.Pretty sure it can be modded to make a lot more power.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 19:54:30 No.13342240
Aftermarket may be good for the V8,given it's a common engine and all.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 19:55:32 No.13342246

Is that the same motor that they used in the mustang? Or did they use a diffrent one (5 0 right?)

Anonymous 2015-08-30 19:57:04 No.13342257
I think it is..if so then you can make it go fast but do get a manual, not the automatic.Could really make it into a serious sleeper if you wanted.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:00:08 No.13342273
I had a manual sport before
My only gripes were that the stick would hit cups in the cup holder, and foot parking break.
Ofc it will all depend on whats around, I think if I was fonna go for a v8 id be really tempted to get a mercury mountaineer at that point.
Is there somthing wrong with the autos? Im curious. Its the 700r4, right?

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:02:46 No.13342290
Autos love to kill themselves/shit the bed.First, you'll lose 3rd or 4th,then reverse...this is what happened to my parent's '97 Explorer and it had a damn sight near 250K on it.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:04:16 No.13342304
You buy it from the STI catalog. It all bolts on. It even somehow makes a Forester look good.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:05:42 No.13342311
Thanks for the info anon, ill look into that.
Do you know anything about the diffs?
Open/ limited slip/ lockers?

Would theese parts fit onto an outback or legacy as well?

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:07:29 No.13342318
diffs..hmm not a serious offroader guy but given it's based on a Ranger it could be a good idea to upgrade it.Explorer=Ranger with a permanent roof and maybe a set of back doors.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:08:43 No.13342323
I don't know that there was ever a body kit for those models. You could probably adapt Forester parts, but that's a lot of money for rare parts you're just going to hack up.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:09:57 No.13342332
Alright then, thanks anon.
Do you happen to know if there are any explorer seats with headrests?

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:12:27 No.13342350
No,but if there's a will there is always a way.Just look or modify them yourself.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:23:11 No.13342411
get the subaru outback wagon. it will never die. Just dont beat on it too much (rev limiter is a no)

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:25:09 No.13342421
As in it has no rev limiter, or dont go near it?
Thanks for the info anon, you have given me much to think about.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:34:13 No.13342464
i meant do no hit the rev limiter. These '96 outback are starting to rust a lot so watch out for that. even a guy in my neibourhood has a 2011 impreza with a rusted trunk

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:35:36 No.13342473
No, but are there sti parts for them
Like can you get sti suspension and such for theese cars?

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:36:47 No.13342480
this is some top level cringe

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:45:03 No.13342536
essentially almost all subaru stuff is swappable like legos. Different engines and subframes all share the same mounting locations. Its kind of just plug and play with subaru for the most part. Suspension follows the same train of thought. I am not a Subaru guru so I can't say for certain but that's what I have read at least.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 20:59:10 No.13342635
Well alright then
Anything to say about the boxer motors in the outback/ Forrester?

Anonymous 2015-08-30 21:06:00 No.13342665
Um. They're boxers. They're like a normal engine but split in half and folded 180.

To be quite honest, an engine is only is good as it's maintainer. Oil changes all the time and premium go a long way to making an engine last. Also let an engine warm up before using it, especially in the winter.

Other than that I can't think of anything.

Rural Alaskan 2015-08-30 21:14:02 No.13342711
Neither, get a V70R instead.

Anonymous 2015-08-30 21:15:46 No.13342722
get the scoob

Anonymous 2015-08-30 21:49:21 No.13342903
I had an s70, was okay but difficult to work on

Why tho

Anonymous 2015-08-30 23:05:47 No.13343413
Why don't hit the rev limiter?

Anonymous 2015-08-31 00:18:54 No.13343880
Second this
Wouldn't a rev limiter protect the motor?

Anonymous 2015-08-31 02:53:16 No.13344966
