Would it be a bad idea to buy a 20 year old car if I have no mechanical knowledge
Specifically an old honda
I want to learn how to do shit, but short of oil changes, I know literally nothing
Would a nonriced civic from the early 1990s be a money pit?
Ive got enough money(5g) I could get something newer, but Id rather spend in the 3g and buy something older as long as I dont get fucked over in repair costs in the long run
and after seeing so much love for the CRX posted here lately i kinda want one...but the idea of daily driving a car that old scares me

You can get an old honda for way under 3gs.

If you want a car to learn to wrench on, Hondas are ideal. Parts are fucking cheap and knowledge is plentiful, as long as you can navigate the swaths of retards with wrong fucking information.

I guess im not as worried about the brand as I am about the age in general
Like I said once I learn how to do shit ill happily spend my weekends fixing shit, but until then I cant afford to be at the mechanic getting hoses replaced every time I need to drive

I'm doing this exact thing right now. I found a super stock crx but was in desperate need of TLC. It's been a lot harder than I thought it would be, but I'm having fun and learning a lot. If I could do it again I would choose a Honda but definitely something different.

Similar to you OP (although to a lesser extent) I bought a motorcycle from 2008 to fix up with zero prior mechanical knowledge. With some proper reading, tools, and a bit of courage - you can get the hang of just about anything.

I'd say go for it.

If you get a Honda or Toyota, the thing should run fine aside from easy, cheap mechanical fixes and routine maintenance.

Just watch out for rust and body work issues, that is another level.

coming from a mechanicfag, old Hondas are easy to work on. early 90s Civic would be fine for you to learn on. plus any part you could possibly need will be at the junkyards

theres nothing to worry about daily driving an old car like that, my whole live i have daily driven 70s-early 90s Japanese cars without problem.

Crx parts are some of the hardest honda cars to get parts for.

Crx was a nice car in the day, but jesus, why spend that money on an old ass car?

Old Hondas are easy to work on. Hell, '80s and early '90s compacts in general are easy. Get a good repair manual, and you'll be fine.
