Compact or DSLR

Hello, I don't normally post on /p/ so go easy...
I want to get a new camera, I have had Analog SLRs in the past (Nikon F80) and currently have a shitty compact that is full of fluff and pretty much useless for my needs. I am WAY out of the loop for current cameras and haven't owned a DSLR before. My budget is pretty flexible but of course I don't want to spend more than I need to. Really as a max, I would probably say £1000 but could be persuaded to go higher but would really like to spend HALF of that if I can get away with it...
Basically I am looking for either a DSLR or a new high end compact. I work as an Airline Pilot and this presents a few challenges for photos. I need something I can force to focus manually or at least ignore short range objects (rather than having photos focused on the cockpit window). It also has to work in low light levels, I want to photograph things like cities at night and IF POSSIBLY very low light things like the Aurora Borealis (I am based in Scotland and it is visible occasionally at this time of year, would be great to snap a photo of it to show off on Facebook).

So I'm currently planning on launching a weather balloon with a payload filled with cameras taking video and stills (two horizontal, one up, one down), which would go up to ~105k feet then drop. I'm currently having trouble settling on the right cams for the task. Any suggestions?
