So I started taking pictures today with my first DSLR. I feel really awkward, like I don't know what to do, or where to start. I'm devotedly reading the manual and all, I don't want to come out like a pretentious tumblartist who thinks no technicalities are needed for art at times. How did you feel when you first held your first camera in your hands and started shooting? Pic unrelated, a glitchy mess I sometimes enjoy making from cheap cellphone pics. [EXIF data available. Here's a bunch of shit I found today while I had 24 hours of completely free time setting up my server http://flashhavoc.com/best-wireless-flash-gear-of-2012/ http://www.walmart.com/ip/Bayco-1000W-Halogen-Work-Light/16533146 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWLMmhY0YW4 Plaintext list of first link: 1 – Canon 600EX-RT & ST-E3-RT 2 – Phottix ODIN TTL 3 – Sekonic L-478DR & PocketWizard ControlTL 4 – YongNuo YN-622C 5 – Nissin MG8000 Extreme 6 – PocketWizard Plus III 7 – Nice Photo N Flash 8 – Quantum Co-Pilot 9 – Elinchrom Quadra Hybrid RX – Lithium Ion Battery 10 – Commlite Comtrig T320 Personally, I shoot Nikon so that Canon stuff won't work for me here. But there's a lot of quality on this list that isn't f/Canon. Lots of budget stuff too. I am also trying to buy babbys first high-power strobe. I have heard a lot about Alienbees strobes. I've already got 3 flashes: Nikon Sb-600, Nikon SB-26, and a Vivitar 283. I want something that doesn't HAVE to use batteries. I'm sick of buying batteries or recharging my shit after two hours of shooting. What does /p/ think of that linked Walmart 1000W halogen work-light as continuous lighting? The youtube link at the end shows some super cheap Vagabond-diy thing I might try as well. Et tu, /p?

I want to get into film, but I know nothing about it. With a camera like the Nikon AE1, what is the image quality like? And since I would send my photos off to be developed, do I get them to give me digital or hard copy? If I did choose digital, what would the quality be like compared to a D5100? Thanks

Looking at getting a 3 light setup for studio and location shoots. The Einstein 640 from Paul Buff look pretty neat and the price is affordable. Any thoughts, /p/? [EXIF data available. Carefully considering the distinction between camera enthusiasts and actual photographers, as there seem to be more of the former around nowadays, rather than the latter. Here is a list of traits I have compiled that will let you know when you are up against one of many camera enthusiasts (also known online and colloquially as gear fags) when out and about: 1: They claim they shoot 'just for fun' when you point out something is wrong with an image taken from their camera worth thousands of dollars. 2: 'Small and Lightweight' is a priority feature for their expensive camera. 3: They determine the quality of a high end camera by looking at the LCD screen on the back. 4: Brand name and model number seems to have more significance to them than focal length and format size. 5: Shooting film is too expensive for them so they buy $5000 worth of digital camera equipment instead. 6: They buy a new camera every 2 years, or change brands because they want 'better quality images'. 7: They buy based purely on specs and never talk about how a camera feels in their hands. 8: Having bigger numbers on the box equates to a better camera for them. 9: They can spout off DXO dynamic range test scores for their camera, but can't actually tell you what dynamic range is. 10: You hear them say 'I'll just fix it in photoshop later'. Discuss. [EXIF data available. Click here to show/hide.] Camera-Specific Properties:Image-Specific Properties:Image OrientationTop, Left-HandColor Space InformationsRGBImage Width483Image Height384

Sup /p/, pulled the trigger and bought my first off camera flash today, a YN560. Heard a lot of good things about it, and you can't beat the price. I've watched Zack Arias' One Light workshop, but I don't think I'll be shooting models anytime soon. What other kinds of things could I do, strobist style? You guys got any ideas?
