I came across a photoshopR post on Chris Crisman's editing style on the model mayhem forums, its good stuff, well what I can understand anyway. this is the question he answers: Does anyone have an idea of how his photos are retouched, some main bullet points? They have this painterly look to them and I can't for the life of me figure out how it's done. I think I know the shooting / lighting stuff that goes into it - usually it's a big Octa lighting the subject pretty close to the ambient (not overpowering the sun or anything, but bringing model's face to the same level as ambient) + shot with a wide aperture, but it's not enough, there's certainly some serious retouching that goes into it that I'd like to understand. That last one they actually underexpose the background but it still shows that painterly look. As far as I know these are not composites, at least not the last one. Thoughts?

Hey guys, this is my first time on this board, here's how it is: I'm new to photography. I know a thing or two about things like ISO, exposure, lens size, etc. But I've never held a DSLR before. A client of mine wants me to take photos of his art for him. He's in possession of items costing between €1000 and €40,000 and is looking to put them up for auction. Included is a picture he has had made professionally. I'm not required to meet those standards, but I'm definitely going to have to make some decent pictures. Most items aren't larger than 30cm in the largest dimension. This client is willing to fund any equipment I might need to complete this. We haven't discussed a budget yet, but I'm guessing it's about €1000. I've asked around my neighborhood, I've gotten answers like: "Get a Canon 60D, get a 35mm lens with it, a tripod, a remote and two external flashers". Others said I should just go DIY and get some large construction lamps with cloths in front of them. I'm looking for advice on: - What to buy - How to use I'm most familiar with Canon interfaces. What happens if some thugs steal your gear? I suppose it's something you risk carrying around expensive equipment but is there not insurance you can get? I know when I got my camera there was a 3 year warranty but I think that only covers damages, not stolen property. >pic unrelated

I just got into DSLR photography, what do I need to develop my own film, I keep seeing people mention darkrooms but I don't know anything about that. Can't you just print them from your computer or something?

The camera is in the PRC! It arrived safe and sound last week when I was on holiday. The packaging looked like the authorities tried to look inside but just gave up under the sheer amount of bubble wrap used. Good shout, K-dog. Thanks for the film, too. And the...pH testing kit? I don't have a day off till next week, but I made a new friend a short while ago and he has a car, so I'll try and persuade him to drive me into the Qín L?ng mountains or something. WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE 4.0

This weeks challenge is: PAN CHALLENGE Your mission, should you chooses to accept it, is to pan a subject. Can be anything, people, cars, trains, planes, whatever the hell you want. Panning is one of the best ways to learn how to anticipate your subject and plan to shoot it when it arrives at a certain point. Modern stabilized lenses make this a little easier but panning was done back in the manual film days too so you don't need one to play. A successful pan shot will have a sharp subject and extreme motion blur in the background in the direction the subject is moving. These are typically done at low ISO and slow shutter speeds. Bonus points for unstabilized panning Michael J. Fox mode: Pan an obscenely long focal length >300mm handheld Try to be creative about it. Remember this is /p/hotography not facebook. As usual no pulling photos from your archive. The whole point is to get you out taking new photos! Good luck and have a great weekend /p/haggots! [EXIF data available.
