Chemistry Pre Lab

I don't know if I can ask for homework help here, but seeing how must other places are retarded or refuse to help, I'll try here. A student attempts to identify an unknown compound by using chemical reactions to calculate mass relationships. After heating a sample weighing 0.4521g, the mass decreased to 0.3400g. When the product was reacted to form a chloride, the resulting mass was 0.3304g. a) Is this unkown a carbonate or hydrogen carbonate? and why? b)Given the answer to part a, the unknown is one of what two compouns? c)Write the overall balanced chemical equations for the reaction of each possible unkown with HCI.

Space Elevators

So, /sci/, are we ever going to actually make a space elevator? And, if so, what would be the advantages as a whole? I've been interested in space travel since I was first forming memories (okay, that may be a bit of hyperbole, but you understand what I mean). However, I've never been entirely sure why the quest for the space elevator is neither being discontinued or has been started. Like, if it was so advantageous, why haven't we done anything to work on it at places like NASA? Wouldn't it require just as much thrust to go up the elevator as it would to launch a ship?
Yes, I am kind of dumb when it comes to this kind of stuff, but I am interested.
Besides burning stuff, what are some interesting things you can do with a powerful handheld laser like this one? This one even claims to be opensource. I've checked YouTube for some interesting projects people used this in but all I see are people burning matches and popping balloons.

Personal Question

What degrees do you consider useless and would you date someone who's majoring in one of them? I'm dating a girl who's majoring in economy and I'm about to freak out. She is a hardcore libertarianism, which I don't necessarily mind, but she keeps saying utter nonsense and when I show her historical/empirical evidence that disputes whatever the fuck she said, she goes "Everybody is entitled to their own opinion!!" Fuck economy. Also the whole of humanities.

Dear /sci/ I do not believe cells have lipid membranes. I've posted here before and someone presented freeze fracturing as evidence of lipid membranes, because supposedly freeze fracturing allows one to see the lipid membrane directly. So I looked up freeze fracturing. The foundational papers on freeze fracturing don't prove the existence of the lipid membrane; they assume it. In the beginning of freeze fracturing, they were unsure what they were seeing, but they deduced it "must" be the lipid membrane, based on their assumption that such a structure exists. Later papers on freeze fracturing assume what they're seeing is the lipid membrane and cite earlier papers as justification. So freeze fracturing is not valid evidence of a lipid membrane. So I now ask: What other evidence do you have that demonstrates the existence of the lipid membrane? I have yet to be convinced. Here's some counter evidence: http://jp.physoc.org/content/280/1/105.short

Does life begin at conception? I don't care about abortion (probably support choice) but it seems pretty straightforward that as far as we can define "Life" conception is the only thing that marks a clear starting point for life

Can someone explain post scarcity to me? It is sort of science and business, so I figure it belongs here. Are we doing baby steps right now to get there? Like is the MP3 file a form of music post scarcity.

/fit/ here with a question regarding lungs. I've heard that if you go for runs in the winter time, your lungs can 'freeze'. Is this true? Wouldn't the body heat up or something, or does that not apply to the lungs? >pic unrelated
