Are biologists/geologists as bad as "social scientists?" I honestly don't respect biologists/botanists/etc. The "work" that they do pales in comparison with rudimentary chemistry or physics.

Alright guys. I need your help on some basic math. Trying to find the capacity in gallons of a round tank that is 8ft high and 7ft in diameter. the formula i used is (.7854 X 7^2) X 8/ 7.48 = 41.16 gal. In class we went over the answer and it was 2302.94 gal which you get when you multiply 7.48 instead of divide. Why was i supposed to multiply instead of divide?

so ive decided i want to devote my life to researching faster-than-light travel. What do i need to do to get a job like this at NASA or a similar institution? any books/resources you /sci/entists recommend for understanding relativity and all that stuff?

What would happen if the Earth stopped spinning? Continued it orbit around the Sun but just did not rotate. What would happen? How long would it take? How would it effect humans?

The element distinctness problem is this: given a list of inputs d1, . . . , dM ? D, determine whether or not there are any duplicates in the list. Show how to use universal hash functions to solve the element distinctness problem in expected time O(M). You may assume that for every t > 0, there exists N ? [t,2t] and a 1/N-universal family of hash functions {hk}k?K, with hk : D ? [0..N); moreover, assume that choosing a random hash key, evaluating a hash function, and comparing two elements in D are each constant time operations.

Could molten salt reactors really be the future of our energy? China wants to make a thorium powered molten salt reactor in less than a decade. is this really as good as it sounds, or is there a catch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7FvxN_gkt4&list=UUzWQYUVCpZqtN93H8RR44Qw

So /sci/ I've been wondering recently, why can't we breed intelligent mammals? Couldn't we selectively breed individuals with high neuron counts or those who show aptitude towards "intelligence"? Or am I just being an idiot who thinks hyper-intelligent mammals other than humans is pretty damn cool.

Hello /sci/ I guess most of you believe in the Religion of Evolution, dont you? I myself dont, because I never believed any word a man said as given truth, but always asked and thought myself. So It came naturally that I was a very unwelcome guest in my science class in school. I asked Questions that where not be been asked. And guess what, there are other people that ask questions, just like me. And many many of those people found out, that evolution is a religion, where they give the Sytem and facts, and then go out to find evidence for those facts, may they be right or wrong does not concern them. So, I wont give you a whole list in this thread but just give you some videos; The first are in English and the other half is in German. Why in German you ask, because the Germans love to make documentaries on everything. And I could not find any video in the english speaking Youtube that was made so good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8DDIe_2cHM this one is part of a series http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLJDAupZlsc now the German videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtqhDmO1Q6E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxflZzB9wek listen, watch and think. How wrong is your belief? What are the evidences still speaking for your Religion

Abstract Syntax Trees

Hi /sci/, I need help with Abstract Syntax Trees. I found a good amount of sources online but a lot are from lectures which aren't easy to understand without professor. Others are very formal and provide wikipedia type information. I get the basic idea but I'm at a loss trying to implement a parser that produces an AST. What's a good way of tokenizing the string of code? What do I do with the tokens to actually form the AST? I'm familiar with trees just forming this one seems a lot harder than the basic stuff we did in a data structures course. I also can't find any existing code online, couldn't find any basic (or advanced) parsers that produce ASTs. I know that there are whole courses on this, so I'm not expecting an amazing answer, but any help is appreciated. Thanks!

So using the method described in the 2012 Nobel prize, when you send the super position particle though the box to test if the photon inside is in super position, does that still count as an observation and destroy the super position of the photon, or not?
